For instance, they filmed Joe Dante, Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter visiting various L.A.-area sites used for locations in the movie--as well as recording a commentary track. I was interviewed--at surprising length--for the making-of. Then it was discovered that the company (I think it was Paramount) that thought they owned the rights to the original film didn't so own them, and the project was scrapped. I got one big benefit out of it, though--the guy in charge had visited the library holding Walter Wanger's papers and Xeroxed (tm) everything relevant to the movie--then gave me a copy of everything he had Xeroxed (tm). If there was any justice in the world,someone would issue a several disc DVD set of all the great extras,featurettes and interview material shot for special editions that got scrapped and goes unseen. A damn shame is an understatement.

Also there is male and female nudity, in addition to the violence shown. Does anyone know if the scenes containing drug use were submitted to the MPAA? It is weird they missed them, because that would give the movie an instant R rating, while it apparently seems to have gotten a PG. BTW. I am growing to like the original more and more, and this one less and less (the crappy DVD transfer does not help matters,) even though I still think it is OK. "There is a lot of money tied up in this film and people expect to hear a boom when something blows up, so I'll give them a boom." Something about the tone of the remake just never sat well with me, and i certainly cant stand the end bit with Don Sutherland at all. It just always seemed clumsy and very very obvious. I liked the paranoid tone of the orginal better.

Turning the supporting character from a mystery writer to a mud bath owner seemed to be a bit too weird. But one reviewer thought it brought the character closer to reality!
