I just watched a promo for 'Spider Baby' on TCM. The director, Jack Hill is shown commenting on Chaney Jr's alcoholism and how the actor reportedly injected booze into oranges and ate them on the set to keep himself in balance. Are there any other back stories about this flick that are lurking out there?

I heard the same orange/booze story about Robert Mitchum. Must have been the thing to do back then.

Jack Hill always noted that Chaney was on his best behavior while filming "Spider Baby". He also tells of how the entire crew applauded after his closing soliloquy, nearly bringing Lon to tears. There is a CD celebrating Ronald Stein which has outtakes from Lon's performance of the opening song. Lon reads the line:
"... an eight inch beast..." and bursts out laughing. He was supposed to say "...eight legged beast..." |

I liked this movie. There's something off about it, making it better than the usual low-budget affair. Sid's best role, next to Galaxy of Terror (I say that only half-jokingly.)
Consider the true cost of living with Clown Phobia.

Just finished watching this and I really liked it. Hadn't seen this in quite a few years. Production value was great for a zero plus one budget. Probably the last great speaking role for the Lonster.(Maybe Route 66, don't remember that one to well) Mantan Moreland is a joy anytime he shows up. I've always had a secret crush on Beverly Wasburn.(In a sexy slip no less) ! Sid Haig in top form here. Jill banner & Carol Ohmart...ooh.
Yea, I can honestly say I had a Merry time with the Spiders... |

Also a fan of SPIDER BABY, although the stories about Chaney's final days make me very sad. He must have been quite a raging alcoholic for these stories to be so commonplace. Was he always a heavy drinker or did this come after his tenure at Universal?

Although released in 1968, "Spider Baby" was apparently filmed in 1964, and the same year Lon was also in the excellent "Witchcraft", directed by Don Sharp... so we can think it was (sadly) the last year of real importance for him, as long that we consider the quality of the movies (he was also in some westerns but I didn't see them).

Lon was a drinker long before Universal; in fact, if I'm remembering right, he got fired off of JESSE JAMES (1939) for boozing it up too much.

Highly entertaining. Don't think I could add anything to this thread that hasn't already been posted (or at least thought of). But who knows, I might.

I fast forwarded through the DVR today just to make sure there were were no glitches ~ looking forward to sitting down and actually watching it. And how about that reaction shot after the woman falls in 'the pit' where the girls turn to the camera and smirk? I've got to watch this SOON.
The Lonster was actually in 3 episodes of ROUTE 66, the last (in '64 I think), with Tod and Linc, being the most intensely dramatic. Like Boris, Lon did well on the tube. "Snips and snails and poppydoc tails...." |

There's something about Jill Banner | ||
|
Jill Banner is an erotically charged baby archnid. Check out the scene between Virginia (Jill Banner) and Peter (Quinn Redeker) after she binds him in her web
and sits on his lap as the proverbial black widow. I think Banner was 17 years old when she made this feature.
One of my favorite films from the 60s, SPIDER BABY is The Addams Family on acid. Something of an antecedent to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, it's the link between THE MUNSTERS, THE ADDAMS FAMILY and that Tobe Hooper's dysfunctional family from the Lone Star State. Just remove the innocence, the key ingredient that gives SPIDER BABY he added dimension of black comedy.

>>Peter (Quinn Redeker)>>
This guy steals the film for me. Blander than bland, he's sort of the male Marilyn Munster of the loony toons bunch... or so it appears. In the midst of beaucoup weirdness Cousin Peter just keeps on smiling, and his unceasing cheeriness makes him seem loonier than all the Merryes combined. "Aw, he's just a big kid." -- Peter on Ralph, the chrome-domed cretin in little boy pantsuits. |

Quote: Redeker has a pretty interesting career. I think he's still acting. One of his first movies was THE THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES as the fake Herc. And, most bizarre, he was Oscar-nominated as one of the writers of THE DEER HUNTER. |

Here is what Sid had to say about the movie when we interviewed him
"Flea brings up being a fan of Spider Baby. Sid says they just finished commentary for the 40th Anniversary Spider Baby DVD, which includes remastered and newly found footage. He hopes it will be out in spring or summer. Jack asks what the reaction was to Spider Baby when it first came out. Sid says it was tied up in legal issues for 2 years. The reactions were mixed at first, because it was in and out of the theatres. Years alter when VHS started, people would trade the tapes, that were just taped off a screen. Then DVD's came, and big screen screenings pop up more and more every year. Sid says he had no problem playing the Ralph character at a young age, because he is pretty crazy anyway. He says it was a lot of fun, and did research by going to zoos and watching animals, also by watching children play on the playgrounds. Sid says it was a romp, he got to make up the character and what he was. Jack brings up the recent trend of remakes, and if there was ever any talk of remaking Spider Baby. Sid says yes there was, and no they won't. He heard what the idea was for the remake and it did not intrigue him much. Sid says someone did a Spider Baby The Musical. He was sent a copy of it, it was a local theatre deal. Sid says it was less than interesting, they shot for it and missed. OIB asks if Sid is surprised by the influence Jack Hill's pictures have had on modern day directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie. sid it had to have, because those films were made when Quentin and Rob were growing up, and they were into that genre. Quentin had told Sid that Jack Hill was the best living american director. Sid says Quentin came to him to be in his films because he was a fan of Jack Hill's work. During filming of Jackie Brown, Quentin would recite all of Sid's lines from any movie ever made. Jack wants to know what animal was actually on the table in Spider Baby. Sid says it was a rabbit, it was the same body shape as a cat, just whack off the ears. Incher asks of all the Jack Hill pictures, which does Sid look back on the fondest. Sid says that is like trying to say which kid you like the most. Sid says they are special for different reasons. Spider Baby was the start fo what became his career, his third with Jack Hill. The Host and Bloodbath were made before Spider Baby. Also it starred Lon Chaney Jr. starred with him, who he grew up watching. Pit Stop was also special, because it was his first dramatic role." |

Jack Hill wrote a sequel to SPIDER BABY called VAMPIRE ORGY that would have continued the storyline of Bruno, Virginia and Elizabeth. The script is an extra I'd love to see on the new DVD.
