Apr 14 07 9:33 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Recently I purchased a copy of Black Sabbath on e-bay and only learned upon receiving it that it was entirely in Italian with English subtitles. Was there ever a version released in English and how is the overdubbing? Would you suggest I hang on to my Italian copy? The dead woman in that movie has to rank among the most scary images of my childhood.

Apr 14 07 1:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Italian version, "I tre volti della paura", is generally more satisfying than the edited US version; however, you can prefer to hear Karloff's true voice, as I do, so the US version is necessary. The best way would be to have both versions. The Karloff vignettes are totally different in the Italian and US versions. The ending is also missing, I think, in the US version. But this US version also has a short sequence with Michèle Mercier, a neighbour and a dog, which doesn't exist in the Italian edition.

Apr 15 07 4:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	USA Version Order of stories is: Drop of Water Telephone Wurdalak Karloff does an intro to each story. The Telephone is re-edited to make it seem that the killer is supernatural and the lesbian angle in toned down (via re-dubbing). In Wurdalak shots of the severed head have been slightly reduced. Karloff dubs his own voice in English. Director Bava shot the extra footage that appears in the US print (as this was done at same time as original filming to make film better "fit" the US market) Italian Version Order is: Telephone Wurdalak Drop of Water Karloff appears as narrator only at beginning and end (not introducing each story). The ending segment is unique to the Italian version.

I used to work at a place where one of the women on the staff strongly resembled her. (No, I'm not exagerating.) One day, one of the guys there and I were talking about horror films, and BLACK SABBATH came up. He asked me if I'd noticed that one of our co-workers resembled one of the characters from the film. He didn't even have to finish the sentence, as I knew exactly where he was going with it! (As she got older, she started to look more like Aunt Bea from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW.)

Those eyes and that grimace of a grin are still an incredibly creepy image. (She, and the BLACK SABBATH gal, pretty much show CGI and gallons of gore aren't necessary to scare.)

As an eight-year-old kid watching that movie for the FIRST time on Nightmare Theater I was terrified when that young woman stands up with the candle in her hand and turns and THERE SHE IS!!!! The striking musical chord, the scream, the grinding teeth, and fingers, and the floating exit ranks among the most terrifying scenes of all of William Castle's movies, and possibly of all late 1950s-mid 60s movies. What a shock to the system that was.

Apr 23 07 5:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember seeing this in a theater with a buddy of mine named Eddie who was probably the toughest kid in our high school class. He wasn't a bully, but he was hard as nails and became the captain of the football team our senior year. I was amazed that he covered his eyes with his hands during the scary parts, while I relished watching every detail. I'd hear Eddie gasp, "Oh, God, no," and think, "How can a guy like this be so scared of a movie?"

Apr 24 07 11:33 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The "Drop of Water" segment, to me, is by far the scariest bit of celluloid I have ever seen. I went and saw "Black Sabbath" on a double bill with "Die Monster Die" on a rerelease in 1970 at the Loews State Theater in Cuyahoga Falls with my friend Dave. When the mortician pulled the bed curtains back to reveal Madame Xena for the first time, my spine tingled like crazy, then when she reappeared in the woman's bed back at her apartment, it scared me so bad, that for months after seeing it, I would sleep on my back all night, because I was afraid that if I slept on my side and rolled over, SHE would be laying there.....DAMN!!!! Was that scary!!!! I have the Italian version on DVD, but I also have the American version on HBO/EMI VHS, which I'm holding onto until the powers that be finally wise up and release it on DVD.

Jun 18 08 7:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the Italian cut is much better overall, but I did end up buying a dvd-r of the AIP cut from a company called Thistle Hill Media off ebay, just to have a copy with Boris' English vocal tracks . It's a pretty decent rip of the old Image laserdisc, obviously not quite as stunning as the Image or Anchor Bay dvd transfer, but not bad at all -- and they even squeezed THE CRIMSON CULT and THE TERROR onto the disc as bonuses. Certainly worth the ten bucks I spent on it!

All this talk about Black Sabbath and House on Haunted Hill is driving me crazy cause I've never seen em, yet they're in my collection!!! Actually, Black Sabbath is packed and ready to go with me to work camp. I'll have to pack my double feature HHOH and The Bat as well, from the looks of things. The process is reversing itself!
