Apr 28 10 4:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hello, I been considering a major upgrade to my home theater system... 1080p Sony TV and (probably) a BluRay player, but........ Has anyone considered the newly developing 3D technology in TV viewing ? There doesen't seem to be much support, right now from cable companies in terms of source programs. Is it a case of "putting the art before the horse" in terms of developing the hardware first? Wave of the future ? or Just a way to boost sales? Has anyone taken the 2D plunge, yet? Inquiring minds....... Thanks, Bob

May 22 10 5:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Apparently the industry thinks 3D TV is the (or a) wave of the future; while other companies were announcing 3D TV sets/Blu-rays, Sharp was busy trying to promote Quattron, their new process that adds a 4th primary color (yellow) to the standard 3-primary setup (red, green, blue) of other TVs. And now they've announced 3D Quattron, probably to be released here later this year. I understand 3D TVs use a 60 fps setup, so they can alternate frames/eyes. Is it difficult to convert 1950s 3D movies to this format?. ,

In fact, while I think the better sets will be alternating 120 rather than 60, if they are indeed 60 then some of the existing bootleg field sequential conversions would work already. SAM33

May 22 10 7:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The original files that are converted to that alternating left/right file are discreet, so it would not be difficult at all to convert dual-strip presentations to that format. If 3D TV takes off the way the manufacturers seem to think it is, they'll HAVE to tap into the 50s just to have enough stuff to sell to the public. We're hoping to get a 3D setup after the first of the year, maybe that Quattron.

Jun 14 10 11:37 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw the new 3-D TV set up a few weeks ago (utilizing mountainous footage they apparently shot just for the demo), and I thought it was pretty crappy. The most noticable thing was the [farthest] backround objects seemed to strobe or flicker when the scene was moving. I was thinking at the time, if they can't get it right for this 'control' version, what will converted stuff look like? It certainly wasn't worth the $2-$3k pricetag, that's for sure. The 'best' 3-D TV effect I ever saw was the VHS special that Howard Stern did many years ago called BUTT BONGO FIESTA. The effect was actually really good. Sep 21 10 7:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I recently noticed that today's 3D glasses, at least a lot of them, are >still< tinted red (left) and blue-green (right), even though the movie uses a Polaroid process, and though the tinting is very light. Huh? Why the tinting? Even stranger: during the non-3D footage that preceded the movie (the current RESIDENT EVIL, seen by us in LIEMAX), the color of the lenses was very obvious. This was at an AMC theater; the big red AMC was fully visible with the blue-green eye, but it was the same red as seen without the 3D glasses; with the red eye, it was basically invisible. Then they switched something in the projection booth; we were seated in the back row under the booth and could hear the mechanism make a little swishing sound as it changed whatever it changed; it was also slightly visible on screen, too. After this change, the colors on screen were not affected at all by the colors of the lenses.

It IS anaglyph but projected at a high frame rate so that the alteration each color makes to onscreen color isn't visible because the persistence of vision of the human eye "overlays" the two images resulting in standard color. Or does the rotating filter take the place of a high frame rate, or what? Or am I looking at this in the wrong way altogether? Is Polarization used at all in this process? As I said, this is an IMAX (in this case, LIEMAX) theater; is this what they currently use as their 3D format? I noticed that when I turned my head to one side or the other, the image on screen sort of split up, as if I'd taken the glasses off altogehter. Isn't this process more vulnerable to color balance than Polaroid? Is this "better" than the current Polaroid systems, worse or about the same?

Sep 21 10 8:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Almost all of the digital 3D projection systems these days use one projector, so usually what you see (even in a Real-D setting) is a rapid L/R/L/R/L/R with a filter on the front of the projector that's spinning its Polaroid filter (circular) in sync. In IMAX, I think they're using two 2K projectors, with filters on each (like old dual-strip film set-ups). I might be wrong on this, but I know this is the norm for the 2D, in order to get a brighter image. With Dolby 3D, there's no polarization involved, but still a circular wheel alternating frames. The RESIDENT EVIL movie used exaggerated 3D much of the time (is that what 'hyper 3D" refers to?), with the depth exaggerated, sometimes greatly so. I think that's the right route to go with flamboyant, showy (and nearly plotless) movies like this one; there were lots of shots through transparent data screens at large, populated rooms, with the images on the data screens also in 3D. Sometimes landscapes were shot close to the ground with spindly shoots of grass or whatever between the camera and the object (in this case a plane, landing). I've noticed that the point on the screen at which the images change from protruding toward you to extending into the background can vary quite a bit. Is that the zero point? In 1950s 3D movies that point was usually the same as the surface of the theater screen; now it seems to be a few feet beyond the screen; scrolls of end title credits are still in 3D--that is, there are still two images--even though they're "set back" from the screen surface only slightly.

I wish the studios would roll out some of their biggest, most popular 3-D titles. I'd think people would go for 3-D Blu-Ray editions of HOUSE OF WAX, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, HONDO, and DIAL M FOR MURDER. After that, depending on consumer response, other titles judged commercially viable -- most likely the horror and science fiction titles -- could be released. However, given the cost involved, this will remain a niche market for some time.

The end of the year should see some killer deals on store shelves.

We're thinking this is probably the last TV set we'll ever buy, so maybe we should just go for broke. Right now, these sets range from $4.5 thousand to $5.5 thousand. As I see it most if not all the 3D tvs will use polaroid and costly glases to view something like AVATAR or similar process. I can watch anaglyph now on my 62" Mits but it's not great although it works. Seems like the polaroid will be the future on this. Thoughts anyone?? "I saw what I saw when I saw it!"
