May 15 07 8:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I got ahold of a DVD copy of this film....a nice widescreen clean print(maybe from a tv broadcast?) I forgot how good it is in spite of the Russian efx footage, borrowed sound efx from FORBIDDEN PLANET, WAR OF THE WORLDS, and OUTER LIMITS, and the collage score from Ronald Stein from his other scifi flicks. The film is a direct ancestor to ALIEN and SPECIES series....the alien "queen" makes my skin crawl even now (very traumatic as a kid) Decent cast...John Saxon, Dennis Hopper, Basil Rathbone,even Forry Ackerman makes a cameo. This would be a good candidate for a modern remake.

BTW, does anyone know if there's a John Cline website out there anywhere? (Google doesn't seem to have any data on his artwork.) I love his paintings for the titles of these Corman films, and would really like to know more about him and his work. He and Ed Wood were both writers who shared the same literary agent around that time, a fella named Forry Ackerman. It was also around that same time that Greenleaf Classics who released the QUEEN OF BLOOD novelization also published Wood's ORGY OF THE DEAD novelization. Those are the Ed Wood connections. I must be getting old. Too many factoids retained in this head to keep them separated anymore.

Curtis Harrington brought us together to see if I could find her any film work. By this time she had put on quite a bit of weight, inspite of this I managed to find a small but showy role in the film FRENCH POSTCARDS as a madam with a couple of good scenes to play. She was happy to work but simply refused to see herself as anything other than how she last looked in Queen of Blood. She began going to Mexico to try diet shots that were dangerous for a woman in her condition and it led to her premature death. What I will never forget about that week after her funeral I was going through some paperback books and found the one they did for Queen of Blood and as I was glancing through it.....{the book had stills from the film thoughout the text]... I discovered she had secretly written over her picture "David don't fall asleep or I will drink your blood! Velena....talk about a voice from the grave...

Jun 29 10 6:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I got to see this at a free series at out local library where a collector would run his 16mm goodies in a fairly nice auditorium. Those were the days! It really made an impression - the creepy queen, and the super-cool effects (who cares if they were lifted from something I'd never seen, what did I know?) make it a nice little gem. It's way overdue for a decent DVD release.

Jul 2 10 2:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For years, my opinion of QUEEN OF BLOOD was tainted by the fact that the tv prints of it were in horrible shape -- overly dark, muddy, dupey, scratchy, with ugly faded color. Made the whole thing seem cheaper-looking and tackier than it really is. Not sure I ever even watched it all the way through back in the day. I was pretty snobbish about cheap-looking movies in my formative years... On a whim, I picked up a bootleg dvd off Ebay a few years ago -- a surprisingly beautiful print, ripped from the Image laserdisc, I guess -- and it's a completely different story. It's still clearly a low-budget film, but it totally works. The costumes and sets are simple but stylish, the photrography is slick and moody. And the Russian fx footage is STUNNING. So, yeah, I like it quite a bit now. I'm perfectly satisfied with my bootleg (looks like it's still fairly easily acquirable on Ebay, for anyone who's interested) but I'd happily shell out for an officially licensed dvd.

Jul 2 10 3:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	George Edwards who produced it for Curtis as well as several other Harrington projects thought they did well considering how really cheap and tacky the sets were in real life. George remembered Basil Rathbone arriving onset one day and the flats for the inside of the space ship were only half painted metallic silver because the young guys doing the work had smoked way too much pot. He said Rathbone could not help but the smell the reefer in the air that is if he even realized that was what it was....They paid him a flat $5000 for his work on QUEEN OF BLOOD and according to Edwards he was glad to have it as roles were in short supply except for AIP that still believed in maquee value of old timers like Francis X Bushman and Buster Keaton. George used to laugh at the lunacy of having a hairdresser constantly giving leading lady Judith whats her name these elaborate hairdo's when she was supposed to be in deep space....it always reminded me of the space crew in FIRE MAIDIENS FROM OUTER SPACE lighting up cigarettes after they landed on alien turf. The best thing about it is of course Florence Marley and her other worldly presence.

I never saw this as a kid but discovered it during my rediscovery of these films in my 20's. I read about it and the other movies he made from the various Russian films he acquired. This is by far the best of the bunch. Florence Marley was definitely eerie as the alien more so since she never really said a word but seemed to be smiling all the time; apparently her world never monitored our broadcasts. There's not much action in the movie, but it definitely holds your interest through out. Its kind of amazing that a movie made in this way could be as good as this.
