Apr 20 10 10:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like in that last shot I posted (of the shark grabbing Quint) how you can see the tip of it's tail out behind it. Something you don't really see in the film. Shows how big the thing is! Also, in that same shot I'm describing above, that may be Shaw's stunt double. Apr 20 10 3:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sure, guys! Glad you took a peek. My JAWS buddies and I had a big discussion about that one with Quint standing over the bloodied whale. We couldn't figure out where (if anywhere) that whale turns up in the film. After some research and questions asked of some of the players involved in the production, it turns out it's a pilot whale (not sure if it was real or fake. I'm assuming fake, but not sure) and you can see it very briefly in the deleted scene where Hooper and Brody are walking under the dock on their way up into Quint's shack to cut open the dead tiger shark. The pilot whale (or part of it) can be seen up in Quint's shack towards the tail-end (no pun intended) of that deleted scene on the DVD. I agree with spoiler, that scene scared the hell out of me when I first saw it. Still creeps me out. There's one shot from the Jaws Log of the huge fin behind him while he's half out of the water with a lot of blood pouring out of his mouth. I don't think that was in the movie.

I don't think that was in the movie. Yo Bob ~ That's a deleted scene included as part of the documentary THE MAKING OF JAWS, which can be viewed on the DVD of JAWS. In short, the original estuary scene had the guy in the little row boat (stuntman/actor Teddy Grossman) not only dragged under by the shark, but propelled forward in the water towards young Michael Brody (who was knocked off his boat and treading water). The shark starts heading towards Michael, and Teddy Grossman, looking like a mast head with the huge dorsal fin behind him, grabs Michael and pushes him out of the way, all the while vomiting blood out of his mouth. In the documentary, both Grossman and Spielberg explain that it was too horrendous, in bad taste, and was cut out of the film. Thus, we get the scene as it exists in the final cut today (with the severed leg dropping down to the bottom and the shark bypassing Micheal Brody as it heads back out to sea). In fact, I posted a photo of the original scene above. Apr 20 10 10:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Rak, Wow, I'd never seen the shot of the Ben Gardner dummy head. It almost looks as if he's black? Isn't Ben Gardner the character who says something like "they'll be sorry their fathers ever met their mothers"? Here's a really dumb question but maybe someone can tell me, did any of the actors ever get the creeps knowing this big 25' shark was in the water with them? Granted it was mechanical, 100 techs and grips are standing around and the primal fear that JAWS created hadn't been realized yet, but still, a shark is a shark. Speilberg yells 'action!' and the actor begins to do their stuff, not knowing if the shark will work or not. When it suddenly does break the surface, that could be a shock moment for the actor. You can probably tell by my question that JAWS affected me deeply. I still don't like being in the water, even a lake. A few years back my family and I were at Universal in Florida and of course, I had to take in the JAWS ride. I loved it but I couldn't help but think, "Wow, if this boat sinks, we're in the water with the shark!" I knew it was mechanical but the terror that JAWS instilled in this 10 year old back in 1975 is still palpable. Strangenstein

But yes, you are correct about Ben Gardner having that dialog. He's also the guy who first helps Hooper onto the dock in Amity. Hooper says "Hello!", to which Gardner says "Hello back, young feller. Say I hope you're not goin' out there with them nuts, are ya?!" As far as the actors being afraid of being in the water with the mechanical shark, I don't know. Probably more afraid of the fact that the thing was made of steel, weighed two tons (the whole mechanism) and could crush them like any other large piece of equipment? I know what you mean though. Fake or not, I'd be totally creeped out treading water with that thing nearby. I've had an argument about that very scene for years, with a co-worker who swears bens head tumbles out of the hole and floats down into the darkness. He'll wish his father'd never met his mother when I show 'im that picture boy ! A great story about Craig Kingsbury; He was the only guy in Marthas Vineyard ever arrested for drunk-driving a cow down main St. Besides the main three, Bens my favorite character . For years I wondered what had actually happened to him. Did the shark get him? Did he drown? A few years back I was visiting the jawsmovie.com site and a very knowledgeable JAWS fan told me the idea while filming was the shark attacked his boat and he had a heart attack down in the hull. The shark took a big bite out of the hull, so that explains the water in the boat (and floating body). He wasn't sure the reason for Ben's missing eye; either on a shard of wood from the hole in the hull, or a little sea creature came in for a nibble. Of course, Brody makes it seem as if Gardner was in bad shape when they brought him in. He says something to Larry Vaughn like, "You should've seen him!" Maybe the shark did get a nibble or two? It's never said whether or not Ben Gardner was actually bitten by the shark or if he simply drowned under the sunken hull. And yes, why was his eye missing? Personally, I think it was just to make his appearance all the more shocking and horrific. I doubt the filmmakers even know what happened to Ben Gardner! Also, if he WAS bitten/killed by the shark, wouldn't the remains of his corpse have been all the proof the Mayor needed of the shark's existence? Again, they gloss over all of this in the film, which is what leads me to believe that it was just all supposed to be a vague "His boat was attacked by the shark and that's all ya need to know". Exactly, and not only that Bob, but presumably, Garner's body was still in the boat when they towed it in ("You should have seen HIM"). I mean, unless the head was supposed to be severed (we really only see a bit of the shoulders) and floated out into the sea after Hooper saw it, that body was safely tucked on board in the hull of the ship. So, that's why I always thought that maybe Ben was NOT actually bitten, but rather drowned after the shark attacked the boat, because nobody says anything to the mayor about Ben being chewed up by the shark. Again, I wonder if the filmmakers even had all this figured out, or if it was all just an excuse for a shock!
