Apr 11 10 10:39 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There was one that had a final battle between Zorro and a metal-clad bad guy called "Dondallora".Another serial running was Flash Gordon so us kids in the UK thought this metal geezer in Zorro was a robot. Can any one shed some light on this serial?

Apr 11 10 10:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	romaurie, I believe you are thinking of the serial *"Zorro's Fighting Legion"* made in 1939. It starred Reed Hadley as Zorro. The metal man you remember was called Don-del-oro. He was a "baddie" disguised in in a gold plated suit to scare the locals.

Apr 27 10 12:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Probably never catch any of the multiplexes giving us those children's matinees these days (not even with a couple of color features, let alone a B&W serial). Even the kiddie Christmas matinees have become a thing of the past. I remember one local theater, just before I went into junior high, would have Saturday morning sci-fi matinees. Usually a Toho title was on the menu, and I recall FANTASTIC VOYAGE being part of one of those double bills and I seem to recall Guy Williams as CAPTAIN SINBAD was part of another weekend's offering. This was a grand old theater, with big balconies and a lobby that really took advantage of displaying posters, lobby cards and glossies. When you went in there, you felt like you were really living large. (There was even a waiting room outside the restrooms with sofa and chair, mirror to make sure you were looking fine for your gal, etc.) For a while we had a classic film group here in town working with our community theater (a building originally used for vaudeville and silent films) that arranged for a couple of sci-fi matinees, but usually ran their fare on Friday and Saturday nights when there wasn't a stage production going on. They did try a marathon running of one of the Flash Gordon serials, and there was a double bill of METROPOLIS and THINGS TO COME somewhere along the line.

Apr 27 10 4:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Do those feature length edited Republic serials that were frequently shown on television in the 1970s still exist? I used to watch that version of The Masked Marvel whenever it came on. When I saw the complete serial decades later I thought it was monotonous, repeating the same action over and over. I never see the feature version offered for sale.

Apr 28 10 8:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	We had discussions going on somewhere around here about the feature films cut from the serials. (Both the theatrical features, and the features made for TV.) I've often thought it would be nice to see a DVD set of those. For years, when I was a kid, about the only way to see many of those serials were the 8mm digests of some of them put out for the home movie market.

May 1 10 11:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've never really watched any feature-serials, but I agree I wish they were more readily available. It'd be nice to see them included with whatever serial they were taken from: Brix's TARZAN serial & features, or Lugosi's CHANDU serial & features. I really hope VCI decides to release them now that they've done all four serials. "I live the unknown, I love the unknown... I AM the unknown."

May 5 10 12:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Back in the days of VHS, Republic occasionally released the feature film versions of some of their serials to tape. (I think I still have GHOST OF ZORRO, and maybe ZORRO RIDES AGAIN.)

This "serial" was My favorite part of the show. My brother gave Me A boot of it around 8 years ago... Its goofy as heck but I still loved it UH OH! CHONGO!

Apr 11 12 9:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I never saw any serials in the cinema in the '60s, but did see some on tv in the '60s and '70s. In addition to those wonderful Republic Century 66 feature versions, complete serials were shown on various hosted kids' shows. Officer Joe Bolton in NYC showed Zombies of the Stratosphere. PBS showed all three Flash Gordons, Miracle Rider and Zorro's Fighting Legion. A Philadelphia cowboy-themed kids show host aired ZFL as well. A teen dance show (Shindig?) showed Perils of Nyoka for some reason. Beachcomber Bill showed Tim Tyler's Luck. Soupy Sales had a new serial segment, Philo Kvetch - a comedy with lots of stock footage and cliffhangers, not to mention a mystery villain, The Mask.
