Nominations for silliest moment are up for grabs; My vote goes to the "suspense" scene in which a robot invader, making like a Peeping Tom Servo, gazes menacingly through a window at the unsuspecting leading lady -- and then lumbers away for no reason whatsoever. A bit of Ro-Manesque interior monologue might have cleared things up ("I cannot, yet I must...Yet I must, but I cannot."), but I guess the filmmakers could only take so many pages out of the Phil Tucker playbook. Hu-man motivations are also on the fuzzy side, especially in the case of the Dennis Price character. I have no idea what drives him to snatch Virginia Field's Peggy, since up until that point, their relationship had all the tempestuous heat of a hookup between Valerie Perrine and Felipe the Indian in CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC. Then again, I wouldn't have it any other way.

They make allusions to him being some sort of criminal on the run, and he seems to know more than the rest, but they never explain exactly what his background is. J. My favorite is Dennis Price pulling into a gas station, getting out of the car, pumping gas, getting back in the car and leaving -- 90 seconds (or whatever) with absolutely nothing accomplished, except perhaps give audience members who've never been in a gas station a chance to see the step-by-step process, from arrival to departure. Good ol' Tortoise Fisher strikes again!

Good ol' Tortoise Fisher strikes again! Tom, I think your missing the underlying message of this "art house" masterpiece. Fisher is using the petrol station as a metaphor of the entertainment industry. The gas pump represents we the audience, getting the life and hard earned money sucked out of us. The car representing the film industry filling up on our hopes, dreams, cash and precious time lost to the filmmakers desire of a quick buck. Yes, this is the Price of entertainment. Really didn't know much about it other than the old FM still of the white eyed guy (I think it was Price as I recall?) I enjoyed it, nice print on the MM DVD and good atmosphere. It does have it's shortcomings as noted above, mostly that it comes up short. It almost seemed like a TV show at that length, but I guess it was always intended as a feature? Parts felt a bit NOTLD-ish to me, as well as the other things mentioned. Even the music had a bit of that quality the stock stuff in DEAD has (I like it). Guess old Dennis Price had a rough life - really looks like he's been on a binge after losing the family jewels in a baccarat game in this one. I too kept wondering what his backstory was, and of course we never get it, or any other one for that matter (oh yeah, the Yank was a "pilot" and Walters and his zaftig squeeze are horny drunks, the knocked-up kids need cash). If it had been made later in the 60's for a few more bucks I'd say this might almost have become a Lynch-like "art film" it's so obtuse in places. The purposelessness of the "invaders" seems almost existential. The reactions of people (really pretty calm for the most part) to the fact the WHOLE FREAKIN WORLD'S DEAD are absurd when you think about it. Still, at this length it never wore out its welcome for me. A fun little trifle. SAM33

I remember seeing it when I was about twenty and being positively astounded that it was WAY better than I thought it would be. EARTH DIES SCREAMING is not bad, but it's certainly less fun than TARGET.
