If that turns out to be the case, I'll stick with the classics, thanks, although hopefully this will at least result in properly remastered OAR stereo DVDs/Blu-rays of the Heisei films Sony has already put out, with original end credit sequences intact. Oh yeah, and we could finally use proper DVDs/Blu-rays of GODZILLA VS. MEGALON and RETURN OF GODZILLA/GODZILLA 1985 and GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE too.

Apr 1 10 3:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you look at the behind the scenes book for the 98 Godzilla, you'll see they used a man in a suit a lot, then replaced most of it with CG. When he bursts through the Garden near the end, that's a guy in a suit. Point is, I thought it was a pretty good suit. If they used something with that quality with some CG enhancements, that might be cool. I don't understand this blind anti-CG rant all the time. Yes, it can be used WAY too much, but I thought it was used well in the 98 Godzilla. In fact, I thought it would have been a better movie if they just called it something else. I thought the taxi cab chase at the end was very well done.

Apr 1 10 4:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, I think GINO has some of the best CGI I've ever seen (helps to be set in never ending torrential rain, if Godzilla doesn't get them, the deluge will!). I think its an entertaining and very enjoyable film, but I have two bug bears. 1) Calling it Godzilla is all well and good but if its not a dinosaur, its not Godzilla. An oversized iguana is NOT a dinosaur. The film loses the primordial tone. 2) Since I ragged on Megalon for turning a nuclear ravaged world into third rate goons, I find this film's rather silly representation as the French as atomic ne-do wells behind the monster to be rather unpleasant, considering America's role in atomic warfare in general, and its specific role in influencing Godzilla. Generic atomic tests would have been fine, but pointing the finger at a specific country reveals an unwanted bias (which Honda was canny to avoid). And not one jerry lewis joke? We wuz robbed!!!

It seems that people have complained since the mid 70's films that the "man-in-a-suit" histrionics and outdated miniatures had to go and were a blight on the series,especially in the light of the advancements STAR WARS had brought upon the FX world. Now we have the capacity to make Godzilla wreak more havoc than has ever been allowable on screen with modern FX and its back to a purist "man-in-a-suit or bust" position. I grew up on the Toho films and all the henshin TV shows. I watched Godzilla at my grandmothers on cable during the Thanksgiving holiday and would take the Godzilla Crestwood book out of my local school library at every possible opportunity. I used to draw the Godzilla monster stable over and over again in my youth. Now,in my 30's,married and a dad,i collect tons of Marmit and Marusan Toho vinyl figures and rewatch all the old films on DVD with my daughter. I love the classic Tsuburaya FX work as much as anyone....BUT i think Tsuburaya himself,if he were alive today,would jump at the chance to utilize a formidable tool like CGI to help visualize anything he could imagine on film. Every other pop culture figure gets reinvented time and time again and the world keeps turning. I think Godzilla can survive another CGI facelift unscathed. Hell,the scant few minutes he appeared in ALWAYS 2 in CGI form,i got a great rush of nostalgia and enjoyed watching him in action much,much more than i have watching any of his 1990-2000 legit appearances.

Apr 3 10 9:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I DO think a lot of today's films rely on CGI too much and overdo the amount of it in a single film, but I don't think it's necessarily "handled VERY badly". I would say TV CGI is not very good most of the time. Which I can't figure out, because I thought Walking With Dinosaurs (done over ten years ago) was phenomenal and still looks great, but other scientific shows or (gulp!) those SyFy movies are really badly done. I would guess cost is a large factor and very tight time frames in which to get it done.

Now, the FX aren't the primary weakness, but they don't help. However, Cloverfield, The Host, and District 9 have shown us what can be accomplished for not much more than suitmation costs, and it's remarkably effective. I don't see any reason why a cgi Godzilla wouldn't work.

Hell, they could even use a suit as the main model for it so as to keep the bulkiness that is a big part of Godzilla's appearance. Suits and CGI both have their flaws: suits look too stiff and CGI looks very kinetic but as a result doesn't look like it quite exists in physical space. Here!

I agree, it would be pure foolishness to try and animate Godzilla without some sort of physical object/actor there to serve as a basis. If you want him to look like he has any mass/weight at all you need something there to model it on. That's what worked for Kong in Jackson's remake and for the Prawn in D9.
