I think Dawn is a great anti-consumer culture, anti-republican film.

I mean, look at it: The media, as protrayed by the TV station, just worries about filling it's braodcast time, never mind they already have an agenda, (to keep their ratings up) and are working against the truth... they don't care if people get sent to their deaths by going to fallen rescue stations. The host and the crew are all jeering the scientist-guest, even though he is telling everyone EXACTLY what's going on. (Just like FOX News lieing about global warming...)

The SWAT team moves in on a group of minority poor people, squatting in their apartment buildings, refusing to let the government tell them how to live: the government is working on eliminating the dead. Instead, the residents want to stick to their old ways, and give the dead a decent burial... So, the racist cops start killing the zombies, and the living poor indiscriminately. (I guess they ran out of pepper spray?) Literally, the authorities can't tell who is a threat, and who is an innocent bystander. Again, we see this same thing happening with OWS, and the NYC... or in Wisconsin and the anti-Scott Walker protesters.

Our main protagonists make good their escape, and watch from above as society breaks down into a beer fueled, redneck, NRA turkey shoot... Law and order has broken down, goverment has been destroyed. It's the Tea Party dream...they get to shoot their neighbors! It's total chaos, and an Ayn Randian "every man for himself" philosophy takes over. The world falls into darkness.

Then, they find the mall.

Instead of sticking to their original plan, of finding someplace safe and out of the reach of the living dead, they see the material riches literally at their feet, and decide to hole up there. They get greedy. That greed leads them to getting sloppy... one of their number gets bitten because he was acting like some GOP cowboy... like Rick Perry giving a press conference while drunk.

Things seem to settle down for a while... after they eliminate the living dead from the mall. Sort of the "ultimate solution" for the poor/illegals. Just go hunting and destroy them all, build walls to keep them out with trucks, and material riches will be your reward! (I'd bet they killed off 99% of the zombies in that mall! Leaving just them, the survivors, the 1% at the top.) Our characters just barracade themselves in, and let the rest of the world go to hell.

Then, the attack from outside. You could see the bikers as an outside threat, like the EU dragging the rest of the world's economy down, or you could see them as a return of the 99%... only these people are alive and awake to how they have been cheated of riches that should have been made available to them as well. (go back and listen to their radio ultimatum again... does that sound vaugely familliar?)

Revolution ensues... the 1% suffer losses, but they escape again, with virtually no fuel to take them anywhere... the living dead (the common people) have eliminated the "army" which attempted to wipe them out... and they posess the mall again, and take back the world that was rightfully theirs.


And if you think this interpretation of DotD is stupid, I'll just point out that it's no more "wrong" or "stupid" than some of the right wing interpretaions I've been reading here.

Movies are art. You can see whatever you like in them, just as you can with a painting, or a peice of music. Considering Romero's liberal politics, I think mine might be closer to the truth. But, if you listen to crap like FOX News, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh exclusively... I guess you would end up with a skewed world view., one that warps your view of pop culture too.
