Finally saw this this morning at 3 AM after being tantalized for decades by one of my Fantasy Film Encyclopedias. I still don't know if it truly is a fantasy, but it certainly touches on aspects of Bergman's Persona, The Servant and that character who has made some recent appearances, Ripley.
2 women named Millie and one Willie (W being an inverted M, I guess.) a dreamlike atmosphere (especially at 3 AM, when one cannot sleep,) a thievery of someone's personality; but not their real personality, more their imagined personality as written in their diary, lots of twinning: real twins, water, glass and mirrors and plenty hermaphroditic, humanoid lizard images as painted in mural form by the one named Willie.
But, no obvious fantastic content.
There is a small surreal segment, but even Papillon, which I also saw recently features not one but two surreal dream sequences, beating this film by one. Yet Papillon is no fantastic film at all.
I do enjoy Altman's more offbeat offerings.
Maybe I need to tackle Quintet soon.
