Going in not knowing what to expect, a bit put off by the baroque opening, but catching on rather quickly to the "alternate" viewpoint of the Murnau production. Willem Defoe beats out Klaus Kinski for the Nosfertau role, imho (heresy, I suspect). ... Reed

However, the true story of that unauthorized Dracula rip-off that put the official version to shame could have made for a great semi-documentary. Ask David Skal, who related the tale in Hollywood Gothic.

Mar 29 10 9:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Great movie. I thought it was really well shot with really great sets. Dafoe was awesome as Orlock and Malkovich was great as well. I felt it was a great way to get the feel of a silent picture without actually being one. This one is a favorite of mine for sure and well worth multiple viewings. Favorite line: "I'm not a doctor, but I have been known to dabble in pharmaceuticals."

My first thought after seeing this was, "How in the world did this ever get made?" The appeal would seem so narrow - a movie about a film produced during the 1920's where the lead character may be a real vampire. I'd have loved to hear some of the pitch meetings.

May 27 10 1:49 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Shadow of the Vampire is a snarky art-house send-up, facetious and mildly pretentious, like somthing a recent film school graduate would make. It's amusing to see Willem DaFoe in the makeup, but his characterization is not at all like Nosferatu should be. He just grunts his lines like he's playing a muppet on Sesame Street. God and Monsters had a little more substance to it.

By the way, I think the title of this folder should be changed to "Double Aught Films". But that's just me. Strangenstein

Full of historical innacuracies (Nosferatu's night scenes were all filmed in the daytime, etc) but if you check part of your brain at the door it kinda fun and Dafoe, Malkovich and Kier do their typical nice jobs. http://allstarchampionshipbelts.webs.com/

The premise was engaging but the execution was a complete misfire. Plus Willem turns in a fine performance, Eddie Izzard is great and I could watch Malkovich or Kier in anything. Best line: "....Thank you. I think we have it."
