Aug 11 06 10:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I bought a bootleg version of this recently. It was a 1977 BBC production. It's certainly faithful to the novel but the bizarre special effects ruin it for me. Frank Finlay is my fav Van Helsing though and the religious angle of Dracula's motives is interesting.

Aug 11 06 5:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Doctor Who fans probably already know this: Longtime Dr. Who writer Terence Dicks had written a vampire story for the Tom Baker doctor in his early seasons but it was vetoed by the BBC because they didn't want it to compete with this version of Dracula that they were preparing to make. The vampire story was done a few years later as the story State of Decay.

Aug 11 06 8:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This was from BBC television in 1977, entitled, Count Dracula. It was shown on PBS in 1978, I believe, and I and my sisters caught it then. It creeped the hell out of us and I'd love to see it again. It was excellent and very, very faithful to the original novel, as I recall. Aug 11 06 10:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	PBS showed it, but when they re-ran it, they cut the shot of Dracula's three brides about to chow down on an innocent infant. Otherwise it was quite gory for broadcast TV, and PBS was also the place to go for nudity before cable caught on. And hey, my wandering icon's back!

The only 'official' release was an incredibly limited release from the BBC that never even made the shops - in fact here is my copy: Otherwise, there are some bootlegs circulating in the US, but it is sad to see this film completely overlooked on real DVD. Even worse is the plight of the Denholm Elliott 1966 TV version which exists only on incredibly battered TV tapes and the John Carradine 1950s TV version that as far as I know, is lost to time. An interesting side note: the BBC are shooting a new TV adaptation of Dracula, although they are plugging it as a 'new twist on the tale', so expect more "Dracula as a misunderstood romantic hero" slush. --- Mondo-Esoterica.net - Cult DVD reviews from Hammer to Spaghetti Westerns.

Aug 12 06 6:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The only time I saw this was when it was actually broadcast on PBS back in 1977. I remember it being extremely faithful to Stoker. The three things that still stand out over time was the credit sequence showing chroma-keyed versions of the woodcuts illustrating the atrocities of Vlad the Impaler. Lots of close-ups of the victims agonized faces! The brides consuming the infant and the dreary scenes at Whidby (SP?) where the old salt is found dead the morning Dracula arrives by Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray. That old sea salt dead on the bench was just a creepy and disturbing scene that it continues to haunt and impact my psyche to this day. I'm actually nervous about viewing it again as it may not have the impact now. It is downright hard for any type of monster movie to 'scare' me these days as I have become so saturated and jaded by them . . . . . . but whose fault is that? ;^)
