Years later, after the release of DAWN OF THE DEAD, he recanted his initial opinions and agreed that the film was well done and had merit. This is hair-splitting, but I don't think Ebert ever recanted his Reader's Digest review. Rather, he spun it, saying he had not reviewed the film but the audience - which is kinda, sorta true. Nevertheless, a sense of outrage emerges in his review, and some of it is definitely directed at the movie. |

If you follow the link to Ebert's review posted earlier in this thread, there's an addendum that somewhat clarifies his position on the film --
although that could just be hindsight revisionism.

I made the mistake of hounding my mom to buy a VHS copy of NOTLD in 1984, at the local Target department store. I was already a rabid horror film fan, but
nothing I watched up to that point prepared me. Unlike the "fun" horror films I was previously exposed to (Creature from the Black Lagoon,
Frankenstein, etc) these were monsters that could come from your own neighborhood. Adding to that, we lived a few blocks from a large cemetary, and a couple of
miles from a hospital. Every night for several months, before dark broke, I'd do a recon of the neighborhood and see if any shamblers were walking towards
our block. Here I was at 14, long ago gave up on believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, believing that dead people could, at any time, bounce up and
start attacking! Yeah, I was a dumb kid.
Didn't help any that, once my sadistic older brother noticed that NOTLD gave me the creeps, would occassionally sit on top of me in front of the tv and force me to sit through NOTLD with the volume waaay up, and cruelly tease me with statements like "one of those zombies just walked in the room and is coming towards us. When he gets within a couple of feet, I'm bolting! Good luck!" Funny now, but back then...jeezus, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I make it a point to watch NOTLD at least once a month...great to remember that, once upon a time, a movie could make me believe the unbelievable. |
