This was a deleted scene that, along with two or so other deleted scenes, was added back into the film in 1979 when it was run on ABC to lengthen the running time. Aug 28 12 2:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If it is the same set of deleted scenes I am thinking of, they were taken out for good reason. The fingernails on the chalkboard incident was one of the great character introductions of all time. When I saw the TV edit, with some scenes of Quint BEFORE that scene, it took a lot of the power away from the original introduction.

Aug 28 12 4:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I agree. I really am glad the scene with Quint and the boy was removed. Quint's intro as it stands is classic. However, I do enjoy the little bit of chummy banter between Hooper and Brody as they're under the dock looking to cut open the shark, and they come across the driplets of blood oozing down the dock. (Though in the finished movie it works well when they cut right to Hooper and his knife performing the 'surgery'). I think JAWS is a case where most of the "excised" scenes were better off left out. But another I would have liked -- the guy in the pond trying to save Michael before getting taken by the shark. "Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor. He's deader'n a mackerel."

It got spoofed in an episode of SOUTH PARK where Randy Marsh (in a toga), was having a meeting and Cartman made his entrance by scratching his nails on the chalkboard. That is edgy. I wrote an IMDB review where I praised the crap out of it. I ?!@#$^&*-ing love this movie! It answers the question, "What if Alfred Hitchcock made a monster movie?"

That was a great intro to his character. "Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. I wonder if that was one of Robert Shaw's creations. At an Okie bar in San Francisco, celebrating his third wife's demise, a big Chinese fellow pulled him right over. Plenty of great quotes from Quint.

If it's from something like a book or film we'll have to clear the rights to use it." Shaw said "I don't think you'll have to worry about obtaining the rights to use it. I got it from a grave stone in Ireland." I'm paraphrasing, but that's the story Spielberg tells in one of the JAWS documentaries. The death of the first victim Chrissy is dated as July 1 1974 ... but then some time later Alex Kintner is killed on ... June 29th..?? I have seen JAWS for what seems like a few dozen times or more, yet I had no idea there were so many "goofs" and blunders in the film! I checked on the IMDB and you may be amazed at some of these 'errors'. But I'm just having fun with this; I love this film and it's easily in my all-time Top Ten... but check out this very long list and you may find many things you never noticed (or perhaps do not wish to notice). One example is that the amount of yellow barrels on the boat changes from shot to shot. Another is that the young man's severed leg which sinks to the ocean floor has a sneaker on it when he wasn't wearing any shoes when he was attacked. One thing for sure is that it proves how captivating an experience JAWS is to watch. You're so involved in it that you don't even notice whatever flaws are listed here. As a matter of fact, right after I'd read all the 'goofs' in that list I linked, I watched JAWS again and even while I was LOOKING for the 'mistakes', it was damn hard to find them.
