Oct 16 07 10:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw this one when I was a kid and it remained a topic of conversation for quite a few days at school. I still recall Estelle Parson's accent "Bahhhhhney!" and James Earl Jones' performance. (Has he ever given a bad one?) The recall scenes were scary because there were handled in a nightmarish, dreamlike way and the script, acting and direction were top notch. At the time I thought the mid 60s were ancient history even though this was a fairly fresh account when the TV movie aired in '75. Funny how the world begins only when it begins FOR YOU. It didn't convince me about the existence of UFOs either, but it did convince me that some people have convinced themselves and are true believers. Very entertaining TV flick.

Aug 11 08 9:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	What's funny is that you don't HAVE TO have any sympathy for the belief in abductions to like this story, and to really like Betty and Barney. You CAN watch it as a UFO story, or as a scary story, period, or as a very good drama about real people (that came along several years before the "docu-drama" craze really took over). Parsons and Jones were as great in it as everyone here says. (The part where Barney is reliving his worry about not only being afraid, but being afraid in front of Betty, is one of the most moving parts.) And Barnard Hughes was also great in it (he played a few doctors in comedies, so seeing him as a doctor in a drama was very fitting). Whether you believe it or not, this story - with a black and white intellectual couple in New England - makes you wonder how the whole "abducted hillbilly" cliche ever took off completely, and how it's lasted so long.

This was the first time I ever saw the subject taken at all seriously. I wonder if the reaction to this TV movie (i.e. huge ratings) helped get CLOSE ENCOUNTERS off the ground? Black Hole DVD Reviews

On some program that I saw re: visitors from another world (don't know how many years ago) there was a chart that had drawings of all the "aliens" that had been reported, displayed in a chronological order. Big, small, mechanical, hairy, hairless, one-eyed, three-eyed, you get the idea. There had to be at least thirty of them. The point of it was to beggar the question, "Just how damned many civilizations are stopping by?" The interesting thing that I noticed was that the last one was of the current popular description - like on the cover of Steiber's book - a description that became de rigeur around the time the movie came out. It had to be a cosmic catastrophe of unprecendented proportions, with only the cat-eyed grays surviving. Either that, or the interstellar way station that we like to call home suffered from re-routing, with the grays not getting the message.

After reading some of Mitchell's other claims, I tend to think the good doctor should be more careful with his self-medicating.
