Feb 3 11 10:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm a huge fan of They Might Be Giants with George C. Scott. But technically, he's not the worst or best Holmes, because he's not really playing Holmes but a guy who thinks he's Holmes. Anyone know if it's available on DVD or BluRay?

Feb 4 11 1:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	AFAIK in the US They Might Be Giants was released once to DVD 10 years ago. I don't think it has a current DVD release or any BluRay release. I was looking over an incomplete list of actors who've portrayed Holmes and I haven't seen most of them - and some that I have not in years. No way I'd feel I could rate the performances from the august group.

May 7 11 8:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I suppose no one is mentioning the Peter Cook/Dudley Moore fiasco because it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I don't want to give it a pass for that reason as Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, Without A Clue and the John Cleese's "The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It" all managed to get a laugh without completely dumping on the character (or other characters in the canon) as Cook & Moore's Hound of the Baskervilles did. Normally, I love them to death - but not in that film. Downey, Jr's Holmes was Holmes like Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing was Van Helsing, IMHO. Some weird graphic novel-type re-imagining. I know I saw Tom Baker's Holmes...but don't remember specifics about it. Just remember that it didn't offend me as being a bad version. Another Holmes that rubs me wrong - even though I normally like the actor - it's when Data (Brent Spiner) played Holmes. Too much scenery chewing.

Oct 15 11 6:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Greetings, Although I admire Basil Rathbone's many portrayals, Pursuit to Algiers brings that which was previously murky into specific relief. Many actors who took on the Holmes role for a single outing have been less than satisfying, but for a guy who created the iconic figure of the detective, Rathbone's relative presence, and notable absence from the photoplay I mentioned represented the nadir of a memorable run. Oct 15 11 10:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think Tom Baker's performance in the 70s HOUND is quite good, very serious and commanding. His Holmes gets an unfair bashing, IMO -- including from the man himself. I also thought Richard Roxburgh had a quite interesting take on the character, not textbook Holmes, for sure, but interesting...and that particular production was singularly atmospheric (and Ian Hart made a sturdy, if dour, Watson). Matt Frewer is terrible as Holmes. Terrible. The less said about that Asylum guy the better. Roger Moore, much as I love him, hardly resembled Holmes in any way in SH in NY, but the rest of the cast made that a fun telefilm, at any rate. Stewart Granger was pretty bad, agreed; and I found Nicol Williamson very good in THE SEVEN-PERCENT SOLUTION. However, for me, Jeremy Brett is the alpha and omega of Holmes actors. I even like him in the last episodes when he was gravely ill and all bloated up; even then, he seemed incapable of giving a duff performance.

These days, some actors either have names that sound like scrabble squares dumped on the floor or else it's all three names as if off an arrest report.) in Sherlock. I guess the next incarnations will be Holmes! followed by Sher, Sonny Watson and Sher, 'Lock, T.H.E.G. Detective, Nosey Parker and his Friend the Doctor, The 3-Pipe Detective Agency and The Game's Afoot Right After This Commercial Announcement. Meanwhile, there's also the lugubrious A r t h u r W o n t n e r . Mr. Wontner is shown below attempting to eat his pipe.

To me, blandness is people using three names or calling themselves Mrglhuffer Ian Brznxtthml IV; common and familiar as computer imaging these days. Some of the new performers' names still sound WASPy, not to mention Jewishy, Middle Easterny, Australianally, Latiny, Frenchy and Yankee. Sometimes a simple "Cary Grant" and "Ginger Rogers", false as they both are, are still most memorable. However Mr. Wontner's appearances as Holmes do not excite me and young Mr. Cumberbatch's Holmes just seems brisk but without substance. There's no perfect screen Holmes and undoubtedly never will be, but I hope they don't keep trying to dramatize one of the greatest characters in all of literature. Ah well, guess I'll try Silver Blaze one more time! Never too old to change your point of view. Cheers, CM

I was defending folks' right to not have to give up the name they were given at birth, just because they'd become actors! Oct 17 11 1:22 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Let me add my voice to the chorus of those who've picked Matt Frewer as the worst Holmes. I actually own three of the four films he did (a gift from my brother who knows how much I love all things Sherlock) and I've yet to make it completely through the first one all on account of Frewer's hammy, exaggerated and o-ver-ly ar-tic-u-la-ted performance. A shame because I generally like Frewer and think he could make a decent Holmes if he just didn't play it like an overzealous community theatre actor. Also, James D'arcy was pretty bad in that abominable TV film SHERLOCK: CASE OF EVIL. I haven't seen all of SHERLOCK HOLMES IN NEW YORK but from what little I did catch on TV once, Moore didn't look particularly good. Christopher Plummer, whom I think is a fantastic actor, was a little too emotional for my tastes in the otherwise stellar MURDER BY DECREE. I made it all of five minutes into the Dudley Moore/Peter Cook HOUND. And even though you didn't ask for them, my favorite Holmeses are: -Jeremy Brett was, is and probably always will be, in my book, the definitive Holmes. Even in the later installments when Brett was ill, he was still great. -Basil Rathbone was the man who embodied Holmes for a generation and whose performnaces (for the most part) still hold up today. -Peter Cushing was an intelligent, eccentric Holmes who deserved more opportunities to play the character than merely the Hammer HOUND, the BBC series and the Tv movie MASKS OF DEATH. -I loved Nicol Williamson's twitchy and neurotic, but still brilliant, Holmes in THE SEVEN PER CENT SOLUTION. -Michael Pennington played an excellent "Holmes-out-of-his-time" in the 1987 TV movie THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. -Nicholas Rowe managed to capture the egotistical and intellectual essence of Holmes while still possessing the youthful naivete and innocence that I'm sure he must've possessed in YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. -I really enjoyed Robert Downey Jr.'s athletic and Bohemian, though a bit revisionistic, Holmes in the 2009 Guy Ritchie film. -I am also really enjoying Benedict Cumberbatch's cold, arrogant and impatient take on the "post-modern Holmes" in the new BBC series.

When I first saw a photo of Heston as Holmes in a typical Holmesian pose with the actor in profile with the deerstalker and pipe, I literally laughed out loud. Of course, by this time old Chuck was carrying so much baggage, it was fashionable to knock him which I was more than a little willing to do. Naturally with this, I had to see the movie and grudgingly admit he didn't fare too badly. I think it's pretty gutsy move for any American actor to tackle the part for obvious reasons. I even enjoyed Downey's interpretation of the part and look forward to seeing him carry on in his role. Otherwise, I'm pretty much of a Basil Rathbone guy.
