The only time I remember hearing it spoken, the guy said "Ellie", which may be correct, but I always wondered if he was just guessing himself or taking the easy way out.

I've been told it sounds like "aisle". Its a variation on Eilleen. Think Eilleen without the -een sound. But I think most people just say "Elly." There is a chapter dedicated to Eille Norwood in Peter Hainings' excellent (and long overdue for a reprint) Sherlock Holmes Scrapbook. I don't have my battered old copy handy to double-check, but I thought it may have given a guide to the pronunciation in there. I can't recommend this book enough.
