Aug 13 08 6:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If Miller has a defense it's that his movie is influenced by the earliest Spirit stories which were often violent and horrific. But I agree with others here that Miller is not out to preserve the Spirit most of us know and love. The charm and whimsy of those later stories, those hard edged fairy tales and parables in which the Spirit himself barely appeared, does not seem to be an aspect of Miller's movie.

Sep 27 08 5:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	According to the new SPIRIT trailer, the Spirit can't be killed, even when he takes a couple gunshots in the chest. He just reconstitutes. Sort of like Clare on "Heroes." I seem to recall in the Spirit's origin that Denny Colt was killed but brought back to life by some kind of reanimating gas. I don't remember that it made him invulnerable or immortal, though. Maybe this is Miller's explanation for all the over the top cartoon violence; why the Spirit can take a licking and keep on ticking.

Sep 28 08 7:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sam Jackson talked about that in an interview in which he compared the film to a Looney Tunes cartoon - the Spirit and the Octopus take punishment like Wile E. Coyote but always get up, shake the bullets out of their ears, and move on to the next gag.

Visually it's quite stunning (and the trailer on Apple's website in 1080p gave me a good opportunity to study the rendering), but this is not Eisner's THE SPIRIT, it's Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. In fact, on the trailer I saw, the only mention of Eisner was the credit slug at the end. J. Theakston Capitol Theatre, Rome, NY

Oct 15 08 11:42 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just saw the longer trailer it does'nt look good. It it me, or does it look really stupid when the Spirit is walking around barechested, but still wearing his hat and mask? It may work just fine on the printed page, but on screen it's laughable.

Nov 25 08 9:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think one of the major problems is that it looks TOO MUCH like Sin City... instead of making people think "this is something I've never seen before", Miller's rigid adherence to the exact same color/lighting/effects scheme will make people think they've seen it before and give it a pass. If we are lucky though, somebody will get a legit DVD release of the Spirit tv movie put out in the resulting hype. It's not a fan favorite to most folks, but I like the light goofy action (and it sure doesn't hurt that Nana Visitor is Ellen Dolan). My God, what's Bond doing?...
