May 18 07 12:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have to admit to a lot of trepidations about Miller being in charge of the project. I think his style of writing clashes strongly with Eisner's; Miller tends to be sarcastic and brutal; Eisner tended to be wry and to mostly mock violence.

He is so stylized and over the top that I get the feeling that I'm watching a movie created by a thirteen year old trying to prove how masculine he is to other thirteen year olds. His action sequences and use of women and sex are sophomoric. Sin City was laughable.

May 18 07 5:05 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Admittedly, I've been down on Miller for quite a while, but he really isn't suited to this project AT ALL.(And I say that as someone who's not that big an Eisner man- I respect the work, but it's not my cup of tea). I'm sure he means well, but he's just too unlike Eisner to get the tone right (casting Sam Jackson as the Octopus is a good example of what I'm talking about-just way too modern, unless you're updating EVERYTHING... something Darwyn Cooke has done sucessfully, I'll concede, but Cooke's got a MUCH lighter touch).

May 21 07 10:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	First of all, I'm not convinced The Spirit is big-budget Hollywood movie material anyway. As comic book properties go, it's not exactly "high concept", basically a light-hearted private eye / crime drama in a stylized retro urban setting. Second, if it were done with absolute fidelity to Eisner's vision, it would be even LESS commercial -- don't get me wrong, I love love LOVE the original comics, but they're very much of their time, and any attempt to translate Eisner's quirky sensibilities intact to the screen is bound to come off as "camp". Would the audience that goes to Spiderman, X-Men and Batman movies really be even remotely interested in the whimsical adventures of Denny Colt? Thirdly, if the comic did have to be "re-imagined" for the modern era, Frank Miller is just about the LAST guy I would hire to do it. Sure, he's a huge fan of the source material, and was personally a great friend of Eisner's, but the thing is, he hasn't written ANYthing of quality in close to ten years now. SIN CITY started out as an enjoyably over-the-top hyper-pulp crime comic, but became increasingly crass and nonsensical...and don't even get me started on his recent Batman comics...! Even in his heyday -- back when he was doing stuff like YEAR ONE, BORN AGAIN, etc -- I think his sensibilities would be at odds with The Spirit. And these days, he's become practically a parody of himself. I hate to be one of those people who trashes a project before it comes out, but for me, this has "lose-lose" written all over it.

Jun 25 07 3:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not a big Miller fan, but if I had a choice between no Spirit movie and Miller's Spirit, then I'd choose Miller and hope for the best. Eisner's talent was so immense that no one could duplicate his imagery on the big screen, I just hope they can come close. Perhaps the movie will inspire youngsters to read the comic, and experience Eisner's genius firsthand. I agree, Brad Bird's movie would have been a dream come true. The Iron Giant is my favorite animated film. The Incredibles is also awesome. But a society that rejects Iron Giant wouldn't "get" Bird's Spirit anyway. Many thanks to James Warren (where ever you are) for turning me on to The Spirit in the pages of his magazines.

I'm a very big fan of the work of Mr. Eisner, once heard him speak at Cooper Union in NYC, he was introduced by Art Spiegelman, they then did a kind of interview/slide presentation. A very memorable evening. Not sure how I feel about this movie project...I'll see it of course...and am hopeful that it will lead a few thoughtful youngsters to the work of Will Eisner...it could happen. One thing this poster reminds me of...buying Ms. Tree for the Frank Miller private detective centerfolds! Man that Continental Op pin-up was SWeeet!

Sep 17 07 3:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Is there anybody else here who is wondering how the poster could look this bad for The Spirit project? Is this Frank Miller art? It certainly looks like it. Will Eisner was one of the most meticulous illustrators in the history of comics. Using this art on the teaser one sheet for The Spirit is an insult to Will Eisner. One of Eisner's beautiful splash panels with the Spirit name drawn into it would have been far superior to this. Eisner was prolific and worked nearly to the end. There were undoubtedly dozens, if not hundreds, to choose from.

Sep 17 07 3:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	To me, the poster more reflects how grim and gritty so much of our "escapist" entertainment has become than it does the "spirit" of Eisner's work. But I'm going to wait until I actually see the film before judging what they do with the source material.

Sep 18 07 5:27 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Darwyn Cooke (current artist/writer of the SPIRIT comic) has suggested that Miller will be faithful- but extremely selective; that the movie will have all the parts of the Eisner original Miller likes, but will leave out anything that wouldn't fit into a SIN CITY type story. That sounds about right to me. As for that poster; it's about par with the art of DARK NIGHT STRIKES AGAIN- which is to say, it's sloppy, lazy work from someone who knows it's subpar- but also knows he can get away with it.

If I think back to 1983, I would've never imagined that this type of film was coming out...never. Oh, I hoped and wished for things like this...but never thought I'd see the day, and another The Shadow movie...C'mon!

Eisner and Miller were very good friends and Miller was mentored by Eisner. They were very close professionally and personally. So I think maybe he might be more aware of how to handle the source material then you guys think. And lets stop talking in absolutes about something we haven't seen yet. Sep 18 07 5:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not passing "absolute judgement" on the movie so much as agreeing with what Miller himself has said!(He has specifically stated that the movie "will NOT be "nostalgic"", and that it will be "scarier" than people expect.He's also said that the character of Ebony "was always a mistake". (Strangely enough, I sort of AGREE with him on all these points- imagine some of Eisner's darker bits adapted straight-on ala the superfaithful SIN CITY movie, and they WOULD seem like a horror film!)

After THE DARK KNIGHT, ELECTRA, and SIN CITY, my money is on THE SPIRIT being dark, humorless, violent and grim. What Frank Miller does well. It's BABE PIG IN THE SIN CITY for Miller. I still say, "cool, surprise me." But-- Frank Miller can't BE Will Eisner; Miller can only make Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. It will either work for people, or it won't. And I'm plenty relaxed.
