I'd add "The Mist" to my list, but the ending left such a bad taste in my mouth... but it is up there, in my opinion, of being one of the better horror movies of late.

No, I don't consider Cloverfeild a second rate movie. I think it is just a kaiju horror movie for a generation that grew up with youtube, instant media coverage, and the 9-11 attacks. I'm sure there were folks who were fans of the original Universal horror cycle, who thought that "Them!" was a second rate movie too.

Thank you! I am SO tired of people dismissing Hostel (and its underrated sequel) as "torture porn".

Shaun of the Dead is one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in the last decade of any genre, and one I could watch over and over again.

1. 38, for the record.

2. I would consider Cloverfield more horror than Godzilla for the way it is staged and filmed (which, whether you think it effective or not, seemed designed to increase fear), and because the parasites added a more personal threat than you ever saw in Godzilla (unless you are talking about the awful remake).

The Del Toro Spain films (Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth), Let the Right One In and Land of the Dead.

Not a lot else pleased me this decade in the end. I'm sick of people like Tarantino, Rodriguez, Rob Zombie and Eli Roth because all they do is homage the past instead of trying to make better films in the present.

Also, would Battle Royale be considered a horror film? It is one film I honestly find unclassifiable in terms of genre.

I personally would put the film in "comedy" if I had to choose, since it's primarily a political satire. The intent of both Takami and Fukasaku was primarily to mock society's violence and decadence and its influence on the young. It's not unlike A Clockwork Orange in that way, which is also primarily a complete political satire, particularly under the direction of Kubrick.

Oh, and possibly the most horrifying of all films to come out since 2000:

"Expelled" with Ben Stien. I sat there, horrified that someone as intelligent as Stein could lend his name to such a total POS! Literally, this movie considers it's audiances to be morons. I've never been so insulted by a film in my life.
