It's time to revisit this topic....there's an earlier thread addressing all genre films of this decade. But, I want to narrow things down to the
HORROR genre (or your individual interpretation of such). It's been a busy decade so far for horror films. We've seen an amazing a boon in imports
from Asia, and more recently from Europe. The American market, with a few exceptions, seems stranded in remake mania.......but as a whole, I think it's
been an amazing decade for horror. Let's see everyones favorites so far. The choices seem to range from the amazingly artistic to the staggeringly
graphic.
Maybe not the BEST, but My Favorites so far:
1) May (2002) This oddball film really stuck with me....Angela Bettis is perfect in the roll of the achingly lonely "outsider"
2) Let The Right One In (2008) The film that inspired this topic...subtle and disturbing, a new look at the Vampire genre.
3) The Descent (2005) Neil Marshall does an amazing job building tension between interesting characters in this classic monster
movie.
4) Cloverfield (2008) A controversial excercise in filmaking technique, but at it's core, the best giant monster film since 1933.
5) 28 Weeks Later (2007) A remake of a great film that exceeds the original....look beyond the modern technique of "quick cut
editing" and you'll find one of the best Zombie films ever made.
6) Grindhouse (2007) It bombed with the mainstream, but horror fans understood a classic perfectly.
7) The Orphanage (2007) A damned scary ghost story...This one gets better with repeat viewings.
8 ) Ginger Snaps (2000) The werewolf movie gets a classic update.
9) Jeepers Creepers (2001) This film doesn't quite hold up to repeat viewings. But the first time I saw this, it was sooo efective I've
got to give Victor Salvo credit. He does a great job establishing the brother and sister protaganists.
10) Dawn of the Dead (2001) It's nice to see Zach Snyder get credit for 300 and The Watchmen...but his remake of an untouchable
classic contains some unforgetable moments.
some great movies left out: Dog Soldiers, Shutter (2004), Inside, The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, Hostel, THEM, Little Otik,
Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, The Host, King Kong, The Mist, Wrong Turn 2, The Cottage, Rogue
