That morning , the boy across the street got an Aurora Dracula's Dragster. How well I remember the anticipation of Christmas. Dec 19 09 8:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Xmas of '62, my brother surprised me with the new issue of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, No. 21. It had been a month late in coming out, and, as always, we wondered if it was defunct. He didn't tell me when he got it a few days before, so he could surprise me with it on Xmas. Fifty cents bought a lot of memories in those days! I remember that more than my more expensive gifts that year. Not only was it a new issue, it had the surprise announcement that every issue would be 100 pages from that point on. I was just thinking how FM always made spectacular announcements of the "good" things like that. Another example was going monthly, announced in Issue No. 57. But when they went the other direction -- reverting back to 68 pages, I think in late '66 or early '67 -- or stopping monthly publication -- I think in '71 -- not a word was said. Also, I always cringed when I saw "Collectors' Edition" on the cover (excepting No. 1, of course) -- that meant it was all reprints, and only a collector would want it. Wow, did I get off subject here!

Dec 20 09 8:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	So did I, somewhat later. I think strictly speaking they were MPC, which to me just meant thinner Marx ones, in those blister packages. Now of course there are whole web site sections about the Marx-MPC differences. For Christmas ' 72 a black light. In other words, probably about ten minutes before most of the rest of the country stopped liking them. Which is fine with me, since I ENJOY jumping on trends when other people are jumping OFF them.

Dec 20 09 8:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The black light also turned t least one existing item into a new one in its own right, and I don't mean a poster. Some time earlier that year, i'd gotten the Aurora Godzilla, and unlike so many other models, put it together correctly. Then I got really brave and decided to paint it, but I used fluorescent paint, without understanding what that WAS. So I kept putting paint on it (maybe more than one color), with no result. Then, the first time I turned on the black light, I suddenly had a psychedelic Godzilla. (Which is kind of fitting, considering the turn his movies were taking at the time.)

And the next day I went to Two Guys and got the Castle digest of SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. Christmas of 1981 was when my family got our first VCR, which was also great. For my birthday my father got me an actual gorilla mask used in BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. I was in heaven. I wore it every Halloween. While other kids were trick or treating with store bought rubber masks and some even wearing Casper or Bozo masks held on with a rubber band, I was wearing an actual gorilla mask used in one of the PLANET OF THE APES films! People would invite me into their houses on Halloween and give me extra candy! I became the most famous kid in the neighborhood. Sadly the mask does not exist anymore and all I have left is the left ear which I keep in a zip locked baggy!

Dec 24 09 3:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think it was 1973 when I got both BATMAN: FROM THE THIRTIES TO THE SEVENTIES and the equivalent SUPERMAN book, from Crown publications. Both were loaded with great Golden Age and Silver Age stories. Two of the best Christmas presents I ever received. And I'm sure that both books together came to less than twenty bucks. And just days before, I saw Animal Crackers at the theatre during its big revival that year (nearly the only revival of an early movie I've ever been to - and even if it weren't it would stand out in a huge way).

If so, I had the same one. I think I still have it in the attic! Also, got a lot of the same things others have mentioned. Unfortunately, I just don't remember dates. Marx Prehistoric Playset (still have most of it), the Gifford book (still have it), Fort Apache Set, various Aurora Prehistoric Scenes. Although I recall specifically getting the swamp scene for Easter. We were allowed one toy at Easter. Man, so may great things. I'll have to do some more thinking about this...

The giver said her husband thought it was an odd gift, but I assured her I loved it, that she couldn't have been more on target. The book has been surpassed (by Lennig's own revision, among others), but at the time it was a major advance in our knowledge of Lugosi's life and career.
