I dunno about rankings, but APE MAN and BLACK DRAGONS have never really rung my bell. They just don't have the dizzy satisfaction of VOODOO MAN or BOWERY, nor the casual way the "good" Monograms/PRC handle their double burden of having to make their supernatural stuff AND their cruddy writing and acting convincing. The sub-basement with the undead enemies of Lugosi, reanimated by the drug addict "doctor." I loved it when I was a kid and still do. regards, Jack Mulhall

(and looking just like him!) I also enjoy Betty Compson's cloistered hideaway, where the groundskeeper sneaks her food.

Invisible Ghost (6.88) 2. The Corpse Vanishes (6.82) 3. Voodoo Man (6.59) 4. The Return of the Ape Man (5.71) 5. Bowery After Midnight (5.24) 6. The Ape Man (4.88) 7. Black Dragons (3.5) 8. Spooks Run Wild (3.47) 9. Ghosts on the Loose (1.94) A few notes... Every title received at least on top score with the exception of Black Dragons. The title with the most top scores is a tie. Perhaps part of the appeal of the film, besides the cinematography, is seeing Lugosi in a (somewhat) sympathetic role--though I, personally, have always found him to be quite sympathetic in THE RAVEN. Ah, well. To each his own! Well, we need 9 more now to hit the magic 26. Keep 'em comin'!

I would add only that the the distance between #1 and #2 is much thinner than the yawning chasm between #7 and #8 & #9.

But it's actually an ok picture, with good cinematography and good, non hammy acting by Bela. But Betty Compson's weird appearances and goofy lines give it that "Monogram Nine" feeling. Only problem is, there's one title among the nine that I've actually still never seen-- Return of the Ape Man, so I hope its lack of inclusion in my ratings doesn't go and screw everything up. 1) Voodoo Man - Most overall entertaining of the lot and actually sustains interest for the majority of its brief running time + an all-star cast. 2) Bowery at Midnight - The #2 and #3 spot were more or less a tossup. Gave this one the nod for its lurid and wonderfully over-the-top premise. 3) Invisible Ghost - A professional director, some creative setups, a sympathetic portrayal by Bela, and Clarence Muse on the plus side. John McGuire, Betty Compton, and the script on the other. 4) The Corpse Vanishes - Not that bad, but not that good (or terribly memorable) either. 5) The Ape Man - Poor Bela. 6) Black Dragons - ditto 7) Spooks Run Wild - ditto Ghosts on the Loose - ditto ------------- "It is, after all, better to be frightened than to be crushed."

(I think you and I are the only people to rank it higher than fourth, with most people putting it around 6th or 7th) Maybe it's because it was the first of Bela's Monogram films that I saw (and my senses are clouded by nostalgia), but I never thought it that "bad"...At least it's got a fairly original premise (one that was EXTREMELY similar to the later first season Outer Limits episode "The Hundred Days of the Dragon" (1963), written by Joseph Stefano, directed by Byron Haskin, and starring Sydney Blackmer as a foreign agent who is able to impersonate the President of the United States through the use of a drug that makes flesh a malleable plastic) That said, it if I had to give it a number ranking, it would probably be lucky to garner a 6 out of 10...(I'm not that "whacked out"...)
