In Appendix IV of Tom Weaver's 1993 book Poverty Row Horrors!, Weaver writes, "Apparently cursed-à la Bela Lugosi's many mad scientist characters-with the burning desire to delve into Things Man Is Not Meant To Know, I conducted a survey among a select group of die-hard Lugosi fans/collectors/chroniclers to determine which of the actor's notorious Monogram films of the 1940s size up best according to the experts. (Also humbly included is my own list.) The participants were asked to rank these nine films in order of preference, from number 1 (favorite) to number 9."
I'm no doubt cursed as well, for I was suddenly possessed with the unshakeable compulsion to replicate Weaver's experiment. Below you'll find my own list.
- BOWERY AT MIDNIGHT
- VOODOO MAN
- RETURN OF THE APE MAN
- THE APE MAN
- THE CORPSE VANISHES
- INVISIBLE GHOST
- BLACK DRAGONS
- SPOOKS RUN WILD
- GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE
