Letters/Editorials
Wanna know how many times Fay Wray screamed in King Kong? Or who coined the term "Ackerman's Folly?" Or who was the first to find that LUCKY 7 in FM#7? How about the first loathe letter printed? This section contains those wonderful, dear to our heart, letters to the editor. I've indexed this section by the name of the person that wrote the letter, with a comment about the topic. Now, please folks, I didn't index all the letters from FM. I tried to concentrate only on those letters I found of particular interest, and those that triggered a response from either Forry or, in some cases, Jim Warren. I also found this section the most exciting to index because of those great comments like "how can I get one of those frightful Forrest J Ackerman masks" or "I think your magazine is the best one in the world." I tried to include letters and comments that seemed worthwhile, and in some cases, just down right funny. I tried to pick letters passing on information that you, the reader, may be interested in referencing.
A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER--FM100, p.98. (James Warren reminisces his way through 99 prior issues of FM).
Ackerman, Forry (How To Hurt A Guy)--MW9, p.47. (Forry speaks out about a certain human he met on his 8700 mile trek across the country, and the inhumanness of human nature).
Adams, Mickey (A Great Thing For "The King")--FM46, p.77. (Mickey wrote to the Academy of Motion Pictures recommending an Oscar for Boris Karloff. Forry beseeches all readers to do the same).
Allocca, John H. (Chaney Challenge)--FM18, p.6. (Another in a long line of "I dare you to print this letter," questioning Chaney's acting abilities).
Alvarez, Ben (Complaint Dept.)--FM191, p.73. (Ben parallels FM with "another horror magazine which shall go nameless" and comes up with the conclusion that FM is the best source for older horror movies. Forry offers his last words).
Andrews, John (Route Sixty-Sick)--FM23,pgs.6-8. (Apparently, John did not like the show. Forry returns his criticism and defends his writing of the article).
Asimov, Robyn (Similar Questions Answered)--MW8, p.54. (Interesting question in retrospect: How long do you think you will edit your magazines?).
Dec 21 09 4:05 PM
Badgley, Steve (Bah!)--MW9, p.47. (Steve wants to know what happened to SPACEMEN. Forry breaks the bad news).
Bandura, Paul (The Umpire Strikes Back)--FM175, p.73. (Paul's original letter appeared in FM171, but Uncle Forry's answer to his question concerning the validity of Terri Hardin's claim that she'd seen Star Wars 178 times didn't appear until now. [holy mackerel! wotta mouthful!]
Battams, David (Ire Of A Vampyr)--FM116, p.72. (David draws Forry's comments concerning Vampyr, plus a few other foreign fantasy films).
Baumgart, Mark (The Return Of The Flaw)--FM134, p.73. (Mark bangs around ole FM referring to the articles as hackwork, the letter column a flop, and calls Ron Leeds a maniac. There's no beating around the bush with this guy! Mr. Ack, the hack, replies).
Bennett, Debbie (Cushing Club)--FM121, p.4. (Debbie speaks of her club and its offerings, as well as advising Peter's upcoming movie as well as TV appearances).
Bennett, Rod--FM130,pgs.43-45 (This letter stands as a direct rebuttal to Ron Leeds letter, and follows Forry's comment).
Birkmeyer, Jeff (Short & Snappy)--FM162, p.73. (Even after 161 issues, the puns go on...).
Bock, Mitchell (Don't Read This Letter If You Die Easily)-- FM29,pgs.6,7. (Once again, must we indulge ourselves in such dribble as FM?).
Black, Mort (The "Kitchen Sink" Creature, Or, Confidentially, It Stinks)--SM5, p.6. (Enquiring Mort wants to know why? Flash Gordon never met up with any creature like the one on the cover of SM4. Forry fills us in
on the details).
Bloch, Robert (Mystery Solved)--FM2, p.6. (Letter and editorial comment concerning Lon Chaney).
Blumenfeld, Robert (Habit And Costello)--FM9, p.6. (Letter and editorial comment concerning Zacherley paperbacks).
Boland, John (Pessimist)--FM32, p.7. (John doesn't like much in the way of imagi-movies, tv, or books. Forry offers comment).
Boston, Richard (3-Dimensional Thrillers)--FM14, p.6. (Letter listing 3-D movies).
Bradbury, Ramona--FM4, p.6. (An interesting picture of Ray Bradbury here folks).
Brentwood, Bob (Short Shorts)--FM161, p.4. (Chris Lee picking on Uncle Forry? Forry giving out Lee's address? Humbug I say. HUMBUG! [and god bless forry, everyone!]).
Brightwell, Dennis (The Missing Ingredient)--FM15, pgs.4,6. (Letter and editorial reply covering the publication of DRACULA'S GUEST and auction of same to the highest bidder).
Brooks, Christopher (The Brooks Report)--SM7, pgs.4,6. (Chris gives a play-by-play account of the first four SPACEMEN, offering comments on movies such as BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, THE PHANTOM PLANET,
and some info concerning the FORBIDDEN PLANET spaceship's usage in three of the TWILIGHT ZONE episodes. This was the only letter printed in this issue of SPACEMEN, due to its length).
Brown, Sidney H. (Ackerman, Go Home)--FM11, p.4,6. (Letter and editorial comment concerning Ackerman lowering the level of his writing and gearing the magazine toward a young audience. Editorial reply is from Jim Warren).
Buchholz, Richard (Philosophical Difference)--FM181, p.73. (Forry expounds a little more concerning the movie THE ELEPHANT MAN and the inclusion of a still from same. Also see Kevin Fitzsimmons letter).
Busse, Walter (A Voice From South Africa)--FM127, p.65. (Walter talks of censorship and FM as his only way of reaching the world of horror. Forry encourages readers to send back- issues [and probably sent some himself, if I know Forry, like you know Forry...]).
Dec 21 09 4:07 PM
Cabondell, Joan (Cheap Event)--FM115, p.73. (The "cheap event" referred to is the 1975 Monster Convention and how the money goes to 4SJ to buy more "memory junk." Forry explains).
Caedmon, Larry (Bobbie Is His Hobby_--FM184, p.65. (Larry is in love with Bobbie Bresee and I can't blame him. When I visited the Ackermansion for a weekend several years past, I had the extreme pleasure of having brunch with Bobbie, Frank, Forry and Wendy. Forry talks of other screams queens, and Bobbie too).
Caldwell, Taylor (Unfavorite Letter Of The Month)--MW4, p.4. (Taylor wants to know why? Why does MW hide the fact that Bela Lugosi was a dope addict? Forry comes to the aid of Bela).
Campbell, Donald--FM113, p.81. (Donald is upset about a number of things, from what constitutes horror, to the obits that FM publishes, to Forry asking for handouts from his readers. Forry tries to set him on the straight and narrow).
Campbell, Richard (Gone To Prince Sirki)--FM131, p.73. (Richard informs the readers of FM of the passing of Ruth McDevitt).
Cannon, Sean (Questions Answered)--FM164, p.65. (I feel sorry for Sean. Sean wanted some info on JUST IMAGINE, DR. X, and ONE MILLION B.C. Uncle Forry told him to see FM's 39,77,78, and 81. If anyone out there has FM's 77and 78 for sale, please contact me at your earliest convenience).
Chapman, Jay M. (Monstrously Mad)--SM6, p.6. ("TheMonster Maker," which appeared in an earlier issue of SM, was in fact penned by the one and only Ray Bradbury. Forry explains the pen-name).
Chernicoff, Bill (Hollywood Monsters)--FM2, p.6.
Clark, Randy (Gutsy Letter)--FM175, p.73. (Another letter in defense of gore).
Cobun, William S. Jr. (Excerpts From "Short Note" 2400 Words Long!)--FM14, p.6. (Interesting letter which includes Bill's top ten screen thrills of all time).
Cote, Mark (Cruel Censorship)--FM121, p.65. (Mark discusses some films that were either banned or snipped. Forry adds some).
Dale, Bobby (Missive Of The Month)--FM180, p.73. (The boy with two first names is mad. Mad As Heck! Mad about the covers. Mad about the articles. Mad about the ads. Mad about not being able to see "R" rated movies. Professor Ackerman takes him to school, and passes on some advice concerning "R" rated movies).
Davenport, Marcia (Death Took A Holiday)--FM150, p.73. (Carroll Borland Died! Twice! Donate blood!).
Dewhirst, Harold (Serious Suggestions)--FM11, p.6. (Letter and editorial comment concerning features on foreign movies and other serious suggestions).
Dhuey, Steven (Icabod Crane Meets Shakespeare)--FM132, p.4. (The majority of letters in FM132 dealt directly with the Ron Leeds letter/article of FM130. Steven offers a wonderful point of view).
"Doubting Thomas" Letter--FM111,pgs.13-14. (This letter was not in the Fang Mail Department, but followed Paul Clemen's article about The Exorcist. "Doubting Thomas" praises the movie and condemns FM for "improper coverage." Forry adds his comments where appropriate).
Dec 21 09 4:10 PM
Earley, George W. (Earley Bird Give Pal, Wahrman, Alland And Ackerman The Bird)--FM17,pgs.4,6. (Critique spawned by Wendy's article "Rocket To The Rue Morgue.").
Edwards, Philip (Edwards Of England)--FM123, p.81. (FM was banned in Australia. Philip says his 1965 order of back issues were burned. Forry comments on the state of affairs).
FAMOUS MONSTERS ISSUE 100--pgs.28-32. (Forry hits on the highs and lows of the letters received over 15 years).
Farkas, Phyllis--see: letter from Dr. A. Lev --FM8, p.7.
Faucher, Wayne (Son Of "Cheap Event")--FM118, p.4. (Forry talks about the Famous Monsters Convention. Wayne's letter was triggered by the letter from Joan Cabondell).
Fish, Suzy--FM8, p.7. (Letter and editorial concerning the "state of horror movies" being "cheap and silly blood baths." [we've really come a long way since '61, huh?]).
Fitzsimmons, Kevin (Atypical Complaint)--FM180, p.73. (Kevin did not like THE ELEPHANT MAN still in FM. Forry explains why it was there).
GENERAL EDITORIAL COMMENT--FM56, p.6. (Editorial regarding the passing of Boris Karloff).
George, Kenneth--FM8, p.6. (Kenneth was the first to find a LUCKY 7 stamped in the seventh issue of FM. I wonder if he really received all those issues of FM? Kenneth--if you're out there--why don't you let us know...)
Glassman, Irving--FM7, p.6. (Letter and editorial comment concerning Journal Of Frankenstein). --FM8, p.7. (Hey! This is starting to get kinda in'tresting folks. Irving has some good information to share with us. You might say he's kinda like Forry in his "s-ghoulish days." Huh?) --FM17, p.6. (Irving's back! And this time he out for blood! [just kidding...I sometimes get carried away at four in the morning...] Just some brief info on future flicks).
Gordon, Bert I. (Stop The Presses)--FM12, p.4. (Letter concerning upcoming ST. GEORGE & THE 7 CURSES).
Green, Arnold H. (Hiss & Hearse)--FM19, p.7. (Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we forget those important things like "you forgot to print the price in the 10-foot-snake ad").
Dec 21 09 4:12 PM
Haise, Doug (A Hazing From Haise)--MW5,pgs.46,47. (Doug wants FM and MW to forget stills entirely. He even ventures that if there were no stills, the circulation would be halved. He goes on (and on and on) to comment on correct spelling and thinks MW should be dropped entirely. Forry talks a lot).
Hall, Ronnie (From The Whiz Of Wisconsin)--SM4, p.4. (Ronnie writes about FRAU IM MOND).
Hamilton, Eugene Roy (Robbie Robbed, Eugene Inspired)--FM134, p.4. (Another letter in response to Ron Leeds' letter of FM130).
Hammell, Joe (Annual Xlnt)--FM161, p.81. (Paul Wegener did make a few talkies. Forry lets us know what they were). --(Of Sirki & Circumstances)--FM166, p.4. (Forry and Joe discuss Jon Hall's death). --(Ghoula Tallulah)-- FM184, p.4. (Joe Hammell had more letters published in Fang Mail than anyone else. He adds some info to Randy Palmer's article in FM179 concerning Tallulah Bankhead's appearances in imagi-movies).
Hanke, John (FJA: Insulting & Ludicrous)--FM114, p.4. (Mr. Hanke is upset by the number of exclamation marks used to describe the back of the robotrix and believes that FM is fanatically overenthusiastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [sorry!!!!!!my key got stuck!!!!!!!!]).
Harkins, Johnny (Bad Thing?)--FM33, p.79. (Editorial teaching Johnny that not all readers of FM are kids, and yes, there does exist fantasy films for grown-ups too).
Hefner, Bobbie Jo (Bloch Buster)--FM13, p.7. (Come ride the little train that is rollin' 'round the bend to the--uh-oh. Wrong Bobbie Jo. Letter concerning Robert Bloch's article "Menace Anyone?").
Heller, Bruce Alan (McGee On The Griddle)--FM120, p.80. (The McGee/Harryhausen article in FM117 caused several readers to express their own opinions. This one happened to draw an explanation from Forry).
Hicks, Don (By Gash & By Gory)--FM174, p.4. (The hottest topic in Fangmail: To gore or not to Gore. Don's comment concerned "not to gore." That is the question).
Hoffman, Eric (Junior Reporter)--FM17, p.4. (Nice letter from Eric discussing the movie JACK THE GIANT KILLER).
Hopkins, William (Distressing News From The Twilight Zone)-- FM120, p.80. (Rod Serling's heart attack is mentioned, as well as Marcel Delgado's condition. Sympathy cards for both can be sent to Forry for forwarding).
Hotin, William (For Groan-Ups Only)--FM4, p.6. (STATEMENT FROM THE PUBLISHER. FM's first response to those "your magazine is insidious trash, turns kids in to commie pinko fags and basically destroys any morals we might have had" letters we all grew to know and love).
Hudson, Donna (Furious & Disgusted)--FM112, p.4. (Way back in FM106, "name withehld" questioned charitable contributions to the Ackermansion as a worthy cause. Donna and Raymond J Bowie defend the cause).
Hughes, Mark (Monster, Hang Your Heads In Shame)--FM37, p.70. (Marks comments regard a certain poem printed in an earlier issue of FM and Forry comments on plagiarism).
Dec 21 09 4:14 PM
Jacy, Adam (Klie & He Agree)--FM115, p.4. (See Robert Klie's letter below. It's more of the same, just recycled).
Jeralemen, Bill (Forry & Against)--FM125, p.65. (This letter discusses attitudes concerning the Vietnam war and FM's anti-Vietnam war ad).
Johnson, Charles P.--FM20, p.4. (More kudo's and egoboos for Forry).
Johnson, John (Interesting Statistics)--FM15, p.6. (John's letter is interesting from the fact that he took time to count how many letters to the editor had been printed since issue 2, (137) and came up with a little poll showing that 96% of the readers like FM. Here's a guy that takes after my own heart...).
Jones, Marvin (Portions Of Prize Winning Letter)--FM20,pgs.4,6. (Discusses Herbert Lom's Phantom as well as VALLEY OF THE DRAGONS and MOTHRA).
Kanin, George (Meteor Bombardment)--SM2, p.4. (George wants to know the reason SM1 was called a "collector's issue." He also queries as to why 8 sides were devoted to 12 TO THE MOON. Replies are from Warren and Forry).
Kaplan, Steve B. (Bad Ack-tor)--FM39, p.66. (Letter and editorial comment concerning the magazine as being "juvenile." [pass me another snickers bar moe...]).
Kennedy, Mike (The Death Of Henry Frankenstein)--FM41, p.67. (Mike writes in and wants to know the circumstances surrounding the death of Colin Clive. Forry fills him in).
Kimura, Kat (Japan Fan)--FM153, p.4. (FM not only left its mark on kids across the US, but across the ocean as well. Hori-san talks a little about his ties in the Land of the Rising Sun).
Klie, Robert (Hangnail Fangmail)--FM113, p.4. (Another juicy "you won't print this letter" sparked by FM106 as being the worst. Forry comments concerning killing off John Agar).
Konnicz, Jeff (From A Former Reader)--FM146, p.89. (BELA! BELA! BELA! NOT ENUF BELA! are the words that ring from this letter, referring to FM's 20th anniversary issue [ok FM fans out there. It's quiz time. Put away those back issues. Which issue was the 20th anniversary issue?]. And Jeff is also upset because it had too much KARLOFF! Forry's mad).
