Dec 15 09 1:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hey all, anyone remember this made for TV movie about Lizzie Borden that starred Elizabeth Montgomery from "Bewitched" fame? I'd really like to get a copy of it. I've been working on a story about Lizzie and this film would be of help. What are the general opinions on it? I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

Dec 15 09 2:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw it and I wasn't a kid. What I remember most vividly was the ending. After Lizzie was found not guilty, we get a flashback as to how she committed the murders. One of the reasons she got off was no blood was found on her clothing. So they show Lizzy taking off her clothes and hacking her father and stepmother in the nude (we unfortunately don't really see Montgomery naked). It may be real hard to find because I heard laywers representing her estate have been going after people who have been selling her unauthorized DVD's.

It covers the Borden affair rather faithfully, and introduces aspects of the case which weren't even considered by "serious" Bordenologists until years later. Montgomery is excellent as Lizzie. In fact, the whole cast is superb. Lots of great character actors (John Beal, a very young Fionnula Flanagan, Don Porter, Hayden Rorke, and Gloria Stuart, in her return to films after a 30 year absence. If you can manage to find it on eBay, it's going to be expensive... but it's worth it.

PS - I'm editing this because Richard indicated it as being a sore spot with the Montgomery family - but I do have to question, in case he or anybody knows - are they trying to keep this film from being seen? or are they wanting to release their own version? If the family gets pissed off, I'll send them 3% of the purchase price to make them feel better. Sheesh. Are they hurting that bad in the recession? Or doesn't the Bewitched re-runs and DVD sales provide them with enough $$$? My music gets stolen all the time, and you know what?: It ain't worth chasing and carrying on about it....at least people are enjoying the work!

I'm hoping if the family is aggressively fighting the bootlegers, that it means they have the desire to release an official version someday...

Dec 15 09 7:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The film was produced by Paramount for ABC-TV, so I don't know what kind of claim Foxworth might have on it, unless he or Montgomery actually bought the rights. Elizabeth Montgomery made an extremely frightening TV movie called THE VICTIM, which has likewise vanished. It's available on video in the UK, but hasn't been seen in the US in decades. I wonder if the family wiggled their nose and made that one disappear, too.

Dec 15 09 8:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't go for many true crime stories, but Lizzie Borden is an exception, partly because in the back of my mind I think of it as FICTIONAL, with some good reasons - turn of the century "axe murder" story, about a well-respected family etc. It all sounds like a fictional one. And in a funny way, this movie added to that - it has an actress famous for playing a witch (albeit in a sitcom), it has Fritz Weaver, and side by side with the down-to-earth true crime stuff, it definitely has a spooky way about it. If it's never been released I'm very surprised, because a lot of people seem attached to it. It seems to show up a lot on those "Looking for a video" message boards.

And the exterior and interior sets are good replicas of the real home. However, the killing in the nude does seem unlikely and a tad salacious as a theory. It's more likely that she changed clothes and hid the bloodstained dress. Lizzie's sister and a friend saw Lizzie burning one of her dresses a few days after the murder, claiming it was ruined by paint. Victoria Lincoln revealed in her book A PRIVATE DISGRACE some interesting and heretofore unknown facts about Lizzie and her family. Lizzie was known to suffer from mysterious trance-like spells, possibly undiagnosed epilepsy. And indeed, on the day of the murders, a neighbor said she saw Lizzie staring out the screen door of the kitchen at nothing in particular. Lincoln, who grew up in Fall River, Mass., also revealed a motive: Lizzie's father was about to change his will to leave his entire estate to his second wife (Lizzie's stepmother). (This motive was later included in THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN.) Photos of Lizzie show a woman with curly red hair and bulging eyes - Elsa Lanchester would have been a natural to play her had Hollywood thought of it.

I always thought it was an excellent TV movie and Elizabeth Montgomery was great in it. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way. And believe it or not, people also believed that a lady would never had committed such an act, played in her favor of being found not guilty. I remember seeing this such a long time ago. The most I remember was the ending. IMO, Lizzie did it and knew what she was doing, but I don't think she went nude. I believe one of the servants saw Lizzie burning some clothes after the murder.
