Beyond the cheap ass special effects, there's odd moments of atmosphere and some remarkably insightful dialogue - only some mind you. The ending actually makes me feel rather sorry for the aliens - the panic of being trapped on a burning ship is well brought across by the actress in question. And Dudley Manlove is just awesome! PS it actually took me 3 screenings to find the toppling gravestone.

The dialogue itself is a confused mess and Bela's stand-in couldn't possibly look any less like him. I know all of these items have been rehashed over and over but the incompetence of this film is beyond belief. Oh yeah... the cockpit of the aircraft looks very closet-like. I've got more instrumentation on my $4.00 digital watch.

I tend to think there are plenty of other films that are so badly done that they are unwatchable. (The Creeping Terror is a good example, or They Saved Hitler's Brain.) At least Plan 9 is entertaining in it's own clumsy, incompetent way... and it's one of the few films where you can see the original Vampira in all her corseted glory! Dec 18 09 3:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	considering it was obviously made on a shoestring budget, PLAN 9 is much better value as screen entertainment than many megabuck Hollywood misfires, which have the audience laughing at the unintentially funny scenes every bit as much as this 1959 movie entry. I loved it when I first saw it, and I stayed up very late to make sure I recorded it without commercials [the technology wasn't available to do this, in the early 90s]. Some nice atmospheric graveyard shots with Vampirella and TOR [two bona-fida recognizable icons to most members of this board] and of course, the Academy Award doled out to Landau for the pretty good Tim Burton homage is an event that no-one could have foreseen before the 90s. Avatar begs the question "Could anybody possibly make a less than dazzling movie with the hundreds of millions spent on visual effects?" Plan Nine asks "How good a film could anybody make for $5?" For a frame of reference that may disturb some: I checked out the DVD called something like The Don Quixote of Orson Welles from a local library. I was appalled. Just appalled. This man made some of my favorite films over a 17 year period. But this DVD proves to me that even a film genius can be challenged beyond his personal resources by lack of budget. Movie making takes cash; Welles said himself that if he'd been a painter, being cut off from money wouldn't pose the problem it did since he had (paraphrasing) the "misfortune to fall in love with film." Not that Wood was a film genius, but since everything he ever made was no-budget, it does make me cut him major slack.

One night, the choice was between "The Core" and "Plan 9". Suffice it to say, Plan 9 won out almost unanimously! That says something about the movie's incompetent charm... I think the best comment made about "Plan 9" is one that I think I got off the "making of" special feature... someone said, "No matter when you are watching this movie, it always feels like it's 3:00 in the morning."
