Aug 18 04 10:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Thing was truely the first, original, invasion-by-a-creature-from-outer-space-film; the grand-daddy of them all. It was the segue between the supernatural horrors of the 30's and 40's, and the scientific ones of the 50's. Had lunch with my father this weekend and he mentioned in passing how much The Thing had scared him when he first saw it (and he wasn't just a kid when he saw it--he was born in '32). This really scared people back in the day, in a way that they hadn't been since some of the orig. horror films of the early thirties. And even those were more of a elegant, creepy scare; not the shocking, fast paced, with-Dimitri-Tiomkin-music-blarring scares of The Thing. In fact when I was growing up in the early 70's, the two films (prior to The Exorcist and Jaws) that I remember hearing about again and again that had really scared the grownups around me when they were younger were Psycho and... The Thing. It's really a touchstone film. Oh, and speaking of the Dimitri Tiomkin music, I remember hearing about the time this was getting ready to come out on DVD that they were going to release the original score on CD. Anybody know if this ever came out? I love the music...! "If I had a hidden microphone inside of my heart, I would turn the power on..."

Jan 3 06 3:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Time to bring this thread back from the dead using PLAN 9 :) Sorry that was lame lol Just picked up the DVD but I've seen the film before I happen to enjoy both versions but I really enjoyed watching the film recently I was suprised how long it took the monster to appear and how because of how people were afriad how the makeup would hold up, Very funny although I am the only one who though Dr. Carrington may have been a stand in for the intellectuals who were pro peaceful coexistance with the Soviet Union back in the day. I an my girlfriend both detest the concept of Presentism were works are held up to standards of today instead of contemporary ones but I figured it wouldn't hurt to float this idea.

Any chance for a future re-release with documentaries and commentaries? After listening to Bill, Bob and Joe's WOTW's commentary, it would be great hearing them on this one too. ------------------------------- "The 8th Wonder of the World"

I think Bob Nichols is still alive (or at least was until very recently; very funny man; good interviw by Weaver in one of the books). Heaven knows there's interview footage of Ken Tobey around (and if they need to find it, all they have to do is ask me). But then, I made the same sort of offer to Warners on HORROR OF DRACULA...

Jan 10 06 11:22 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	They didn't want your Kenneth Tobey interview for HORROR OF DRACULA? (OK, I'll stop.) It would have been nice to have seen some extras or commentary on THE THING, given that there are surviving cast members. Sadly, the fact is there are fewer and fewer participants from the classics still around, and someone should be trying to get their memories recorded for posterity while the opportunity exists...a sentiment that I think needs to be HAMMERed home to Warner Bros. for their Hammer DVDs. It's with a bit of shock that I realize how many years ago it was that my buddies and I were catching A.I.P. and Hammer films at the drive-in. (When I was a kid, catching the Shock Theatre stuff on TV, the Universal horrors were 20-30 years old. Now, the Hammer films are that old, and older.) Fortunately, Anchor Bay had the foresight to get some of the people responsible for Hammer product to provide commentary on a number of their DVDs. Unfortunately, we lost Peter Cushing before the advent of DVD...and I don't think anyone thought to have him share his memories for the old laser disk format, which also had commentary tracks on several features. There are a lot of major studios failing to really take advantage of the DVD format, although we often get stuck paying the same price for a no-frills DVD as we would a DVD with commentary and/or "making of" featurette.

Actually, Ted, I not only still have the Anchor Bay VHS release, but the Image DVD as well...along with Image's release of TALES OF FRANKENSTEIN and their Hammer trailer compilation. (That Newsom kid shows promise.) My Cushing comment was to the effect that, alas, he's no longer with us to do audio commentary for his films these days. Would have been great for him to have joined David Prowse and Madeline Smith on their commentary for FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL.

Jan 11 06 12:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I figured you did, Bob. Chop bustin' is my habit. It IS too bad no one had the insight to sit down with him and record everything they could. Late in the game, the summer of Cushing's death I believe, David Prowse went down to see him and sat and talked for several hours about Cushing's memories of the old theaters and the boondock circuits in the distant provinces; not our cup of tea, but interesting historically. Cushing told wonderful stories within the Kevin Francis documentary, and seemed an unending source of stuff in his two books.

Ironically, when it comes to film preservation, in many cases the studios were often their own product's worst enemy. (Wasn't it Curtis Harrington who convinced Universal they might want to make a safety print of James Whale's THE OLD DARK HOUSE, back when Hammer Films did their remake? If not for that, the original might no longer survive.)

This past summer I played it one night during a family reunion for a bunch of younger people. They ranged in age from 9-18 and I could tell they got into it. The next day was full of jokes about carrot and vegetables coming to get them. They had a lot of fun with it.

I grew up hearing all about this film from my Dad, who saw it in a small town theatre, the year it was released. I just couldn't wait to see this film and saw it on one of those Saturday afternoon, 'Creature Feature' type shows when I was about 10 or so. It certainly made an impact, then and I still love the film and even though I have the DVD, if TCM happens to broadcast the film, I'll sit and watch it at any point I happen along the film. It is a shame the DVD was released so bare of any bonus features, but as I'd managed to wear out my VHS, just having this available on DVD makes me happy.

Feb 3 06 11:07 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love this movie , and the Carpenter re-make , a near perfect story too. sometimes , i would like to see another take on this film , (with minimal use of CGI) , in the hands of a top-class director (possibilities..........Ridley Scott (i know he would'nt either after Alien) or Tarantino.........or Tim Burton) special mention to the crazy stuntman in the original with the gas being thrown over him..............still makes me wince !!!!!

Feb 14 06 8:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I used to have a copy of a magazine called Photon which included a great article on The Thing. If I remember correctly, that article claimed that Howard Hawks had a print of an expanded version of The Thing which included the gruesome greenhouse scene, complete with the alien feasting on the blood from the slit throats of the upside-down-hanging bodies. It also stated that scene in which the alien stands up from the block of ice and frightens the young man was originally shot with the alien visible from behind in the foreground. The shot was cropped to exclude the alien so that all we see is the shadow of the alien. Unfortunately, my copy of the magazine was destroyed by water damage while it was is a storage warehouse.

And Photon, with due respect, was a fan magazine and not subject to critical editorial oversight. It is also the magazine that ran the announcement of THE BLUMMY (as a follow-up to BLACULA and BLACKENSTEIN) and showed a photo of a squatting John Richardson in a scene from the upcoming sequel 1,000,000 YEARS B.M.

It was one of a series of titles Bob Greenberg and Mark McGee came up with--turning existing movies into blaxploitation ventures. Another was SINGIN' IN THE INK. I don't believe for a moment that scenes inside the greenhouse with dangling bodies were ever shot. They aren't in the fairly early draft of the scr ipt that's available online. However, that draft also describes the Thing itself in a way that makes me think the OTHER great rumor regarding the film---that Hawks shot some test footage of a VERY alien-looking alien--is likely to be true.

Besides, all the times I've read about this scene, it's always in the context of, "there's no truth to the oft-repeated rumor about the greenhouse scene being filmed..." I don't think I've ever read a legit source claiming it actually had been shot. And I mean, c'mon on, this was a mainstream hollywood film from 1951. Are they gonna' film a scene of bodies hanging upside down with their throats cut, with a monster drinking their blood? In a Howard Hawks production? Doesn't sound likely to me at all.
