Here's another "I don't quite know what I'm seeing" question a
la one I posed a while back about CAT PEOPLE (then I asked, what exactly do we see on the walkway in the zoo at the end?).
NOW I'm asking about in THE THING ... the famous scene where Ken Tobey, etc., open the door and the Thing is standing right there in the doorway.
First of all, why are Tobey and his buddies -- EVERYthing -- so sharp, while the Thing (on the other side of the doorway) looks very much like a dark, hazy, rear-projected image? What are we seeing?
The Thing tries to backhand Tobey, the back of his arm hits the side of the doorway -- and chips or flakes or feathers or God knows what goes flying in all directions. What are we seeing?
Tobey and his buddies slam the door on the Thing's arm, and push and push, as the Thing (now unseen except for his wrist and hand) struggles to pull his arm out of that tight spot. Finally he does -- the door slams shut -- and again there's a big blizzard of all kinds of crap. Again, what are we seeing?
