(11/23/09 6:15 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	According to the U.K. magazine Gorezone, their chief competitor, The Darkside, has ceased operation. Gorezone takes credit for putting them out of business, of course, which is probably only partly true. The Darkside has suffered a lot of criticism the last few years, being charged with plagiarism by the Editor, and then there's the general economic situation at work, too. Regardless, it's always sad to see another monster mag fold.

Much more distressingly, DeathRay and its sister mag FilmStar have ceased publication with the current issues (21 and 5 respectively). These were streets ahead of other genre or mainstream film mags, but the little company publishing them couldn't make things pay and has folded today. This leaves four specialist genre mags in the UK (SFX, the absolutely awful Sci-Fi Now, Gorezone and possibly the absolutely awful Fantastique if it continues) plus three mainstream film mags (Empire, Total Film and Sight & Sound). The wife buys Empire but only out of habit. I pick up Gorezone occasionally but constantly bemoan how much better it could be. It's sad news, but it seemed like they were putting an awful lot of money into DeathRay to make that mag viable. I am going to disagree with you 100% on Fantastique, however -- yes, the first issue had some major editing problems, but the 2nd issue was much better arranged. I think you should give it another chance, I'm hoping this mag continues.

(10/07/09 1:18 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Oh my God. This is dreadful news. I was totally converted to Deathray and I thought Filmstar was the best and most in-depth movie mag. And yet the dreadful SCI FI NOW is still up and running? It's an appalling mag. And to be honest I stopped buying Gorezone as it has a very narrow remit and too many sex ads. I really don't like Fantastique. I don't like it's design and it's articles are just badly translated and lack any character.

(10/08/09 11:05 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This isn't genre, but it's happening a lot. Conde Nast just shut down four mags, one of them being Gourmet, the longest running food mag out there. Ad revenue was down to far to keep them going.

(10/09/09 5:53 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I hear THE HOUSE THAT HAMMER BUILT also folds with the latest issue (#24), too. Bummer. I don't care about most of those other Brit mags that are folding, although I was buying DARK SIDE (until Diamond dropped it - probably why it's folding). I'm aware of all the plagiarism commentary that has been on the board about this rag, but since I don't visit every site or blog, I sorta like the fact that they collected all of the data in their mag. It made for good reading...for a while at least. The quality of the articles dropped rather dramatically after all of the alleged plagiarism became common knowledge. While I understand your thoughts here, I must say that I totally disagree with them. The writers who were ripped off - not just from online sources - were ripped off. That was their work, their names were on it and in The Dark Side they got no credit for their efforts - not to mention the fact that they didn't get paid. Frankly, I'm not sorry to see The Dark Side go.

(11/25/09 9:34 PM) Burgomaster Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	After the incredible investigative work done by Mirek Lipinski (the CHFB's Eurosin), over at his Latarnia board documenting dozens and dozens (if not more) instances of outright plagiarisms of online reviews -- the magazine apparently simply lifted existing reviews and ran them with little or no change -- it's amazing The Dark Side lasted so long. The magazine made a vague acknowledgment but the damage was done. Not saying that's the reason it folded, but journalism has karma just like anything else. Hopefully future endeavours will be more upfront. david
