This is an interesting murder film, not a whodunnit by a whydunnit.

Apparently, director Huston's original prints were all tinted golden, to better be a "reflection in a golden eye", but I've never even seen a still of this version, apparently it went over like a lead albatross. Did anybody see this version? I can't imagine it actually worked, or was a good idea.

It is a tale of six central characters, their failures, obsessions and darkest desires. Set in a military camp, it tells the story of Captain Weldon Penderton and his wife Leonora. Other central characters are Major Morris Langdon and his sick wife Alison, the Langdons' houseboy Anacleto and a mysterious soldier, Private Williams. It's a very Tennessee Williams-esq piece, with broken characters stuck in dead-end relationships, but even with all that it's a pretty memorable, brooding film.
