THE MAZE hasn't even been released on VHS as far as I know. Even if it needed remastering for a straightforward DVD it could be prohibitively expensive. Black Hole DVD Reviews

Feb 14 09 11:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I credit the movie with intentionally strong plot momentum in misdirection. On first reflection, I always "feel" that it's Carlson who's inherited the family trait at a certain age, and who is the frog (and thus no happy ending). I have to recall the details to remember that's not how it goes. Sort of like the classic noir, "I Wake up Screaming" - in memory, one has the impression Laird Cregar was the murderer, not the ignored Elisha Cooke with almost no screen time. Also credit it for making me feel bad for the frog guy. Kinda reminds me of the poor ole frog guy in a "Lost in Space" episode. Maybe I just feel bad for frog guys in general.

Jul 23 09 3:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've seen The Maze 5 or 6 times over the decades and I always enjoy it, but I'm not sure why. Yes, it's suitably atmospheric and well paced. The "monster" although a bit silly, evokes our pity (as well as strains our credulity). My problem with the movie is Richard Carlson. I know he's well loved. I know he's been in many classics and I love to watch them, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, and several others, but he's more a hindrance to my enjoyment than an asset. He isn't heroic in those films. He doesn't involve our sympathy in The Maze and if he's not sympathetic, what's he doing there? OK, there's room for disagreement; maybe my mother was frightened by him when she was carrying me. Who could be recast in his rolls? Richard Denning - bad guy in Creature -, Jeff Morrow, several other guys from the Universal stable. He did have a dimensional quality, though-- he turned up in WB's big 3Ders, HOUSE OF WAX and THE CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER. J. Theakston Capitol Theatre, Rome, NY

Jul 27 09 8:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just rewatched this again yesterday and I couldnt help but notice the similarities between this story and the legend of Glamis Castle(also in Scotland), with it's deformed immortal heir forever lurking in a closed off part of the castle, his heirs becoming aware of the family "secret" when they are of age or inherit the title,etc. As this legend had been around for several hundred years, it would seem the writer of THE MAZE was at least somewhat familiar with the legend of Glamis.

I'm sure that's it exactly. It does explain the rather unlikely plot--not just a man born as a frog, but in a castle in Scotland with the heirs the only people to know just what the old castle's secret is. I never heard of the Glamis Castle legend before; thanks for posting it..
