The Satanic Rites Of Dracula And Horror Of Dracula Video On Demand |
Lead | |
|
I just rented the satanic rites of dracula on amazon and the print is ten times better than the anchor bay dvd It's the only hammer dracula film I have
always thought that the transfer they used for the dvd was too faded.

In the HORROR OF DRACULA comparison, the video on demand version looks like it's pan-and-scan, since it's cropping the right side of the hard-matted
image. I believe the correct framing should (roughly) have the width of the DVD image and the height of the video on demand image.

What video format are these downloads? AVI?

It's hard to tell from screencaps, but the VOD version definitely looks like it has more information on the sides and top. Also, the VOD looks less washed
out and sharper than the DVD. I watched the DVD about a week ago on my 1080p projector on an 84" screen, and the picture was soft and washed out. I
immediatedly watched BRIDES OF DRACULA afterwards, and it was sharp as a tack with gorgeous color. So the softness and washed out pic was definitely the source
material, and not my monitor.

So what VERSION are the images above? Seems just as cropped as before. I played just the first 2:00 minutes which you can watch for FREE. I don't see any
more real estate on HORROR OF DRACULA than before. Plus on that 2 minutes the quality was pretty bad.

Look the same, width-wise, to me as well. It's almost an optical illusion since the VoD version is smaller than the DVD caps. Tempted to download it
myself, but am hesitant to pay $10 for it. EDIT: the price is now $5.79! Went down for some reason. Odd.

Bought the HoD from Amazon, it is better looking than the dvd. Except for compression issues that is. Colors, framing, detail -- instantly appeared better to
me. Makes me wonder if the WB four-film pack of Hammer Dracs has this transfer or the original dvd transfer (the Uni set of John Carpenter films has news
transfers apparently for THEY LIVE and PRINCE OF DARKNESS, so ya never know).

Anyone followed up with any other Hammer VODs yet? Esp, CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and THE MUMMY?

WMV with the stupid DRM protection (digital rights management). The file was about 1.50 gb, which is pretty good sized.

Okay so I went back to my DVDs. I have the single HOD and the 4 Pack. The movies ARE the same cut. No diference that I can see but here is an interesting
difference in the movie vs the TRAILER on the same disk.
First, let looks that the infamous cropping on the crypt stairs -- Notice that the door is still open. When he closes it the scene fades out BUT on the TRAILER in the same aspect ratio we see much more of Lee. You'll notice the the door is CLOSED in this one - no fade out. The camera is stationary. So did Warners ZOOM IN on the movie version or is it a different shot from the camera and if so why? It might be that when transferrring they just made sure they got the top of the frame in because part of the bottom is now missing. Now let us look at the meeting between the grumpy Inn Keeper and Van Helsing. The first shot is from the DVD and you'll see his hat cropped. But, on the TRAILER we see all of his hat but in the same aspect ratio. Again, looks like they got all top of the frame in because the bottom is slightly
missing. Also, the trailer contains a slightly different edit between Grumpy and Van Helsing - no big deal they do this all the time.

Unfortunately, trailers generally can't be relied upon for comparisons. I agree that the OAR is better for the trailer, however footage used in trailers
isn't always the take used in the feature. It is always interesting to see alternate takes in trailers, though. The Amazon video is proving to be
interesting though. And, while I am for artists' rights, I may have figured out how to crack the DRM mystery...

The trailer clearly contains alternate footage and extended or alternate takes. It puzzles me why the aspect ratios are different. Or SEEM different, anyway.
I'm not even sure there are any scenes from the movie itself from the trailer.
I'd thought for ages that they were simply dupes of what's in the movie, til I got to trying to sync stuff for the documentary. Nearly everything is different. Even the bit in the crypt, "This is not Lucy, the sister you loved, it's only a shell..." Could be the whole trailer was made of trims. British trailer as several shots which are a few seconds longer in it than they are in the US one, or the film (shots of the library fight in the end, f'r'instance.) |
