Jul 27 06 7:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think most of the people on this board have a list of films that are not quite good, but for various reasons, hold a special place in the viewer's required viewing. The list I am posting concerns selections from the 50's. In no particular order, my list includes: FROM HELL IT CAME(1957), PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE(1956), INVISIBLE INVADERS(1959), ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS(1957), THE UNEARTHLY(1957), TARANTULA(1955), INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN(1956), DAY THE WORLD ENDED(1956), MONOLITH MONSTERS(1957), CURSE OF THE UNDEAD(1959), THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE(1959), RETURN OF THE FLY(1959), MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BLANCAS(1958), THE MOLE PEOPLE(1956)..I could go on but I'm interested in other members choices.

Jul 28 06 5:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	BRIDE OF THE MONSTER, definitely. Having had this built up as one of the single worst films in history, my expectations couldn't get any lower. So where had my estimation and opinion of it all had to go but up...? I will defend this film's merits to my dying day, and there are a few. We have a great haunted house minature at the start. The cinematography, whilst it's not going to win any awards, has a pleasing "dark" quality to it, rather like HOUSE OF DRACULA. The sets themselves aren't too bad within the context of the story. Bela Lugosi is absolutely electric in the film, pouring all his talent and commitment into incredibly junky material. His "home" speech in particular is spellbinding. And I actually enjoyed it. It held some entertainment value for me. Can it be all that bad, then? "Hideous Half-Man, Half-Beast Who Terrorized Millions!" - Tagline, WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935)

Jul 28 06 7:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Crawling Eye, The Mole People, The Alligator People, The Earth Dies Screaming and The Man From Planet X top my list of "psuedo-guilty pleasures" from the '50s - I don't really think any of them is a particularly "bad" film, though budgetary constraints show through on most of them, and there's the odd plot hole to deal with... ;) Still, despite their shortcomings, I've seen and enjoyed all of these films a damned site more often than Sommer's Van Helsing. If we go back another four years, probably my guiltiest pleasure of all would have to be She-Wolf of London - I know it's generally dispised around here, but I always liked something about it... the look especially I think...

If I felt guilt about watching movies like this, I'd be a total wreck. Some of them are pretty bad, but none of them are worthless, or, more importantly, mean-spirited. The closest I get to guilt from watching a movie is when I see some misanthropic piece of purely exploitive junk, like an ILSA movie or something like that. Seeing a bunch of fox terriers running around in shrew suits, or a BLACK LAGOON knock-off clutching a severed head, or Leo G. Carroll with a giant putty face - this is pure pleasure.

That said, though, there are some '50s flicks that most folk (even our kind of folk) think poorly of, but which I love. Most of this affection stems from the time and place in which I saw them, of course. I saw HIDEOUS SUN DEMON on video when I was forty, so there's no way it can match up to THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE which I saw at a Saturday matinee when I was ten. Anyway, my chief guilt-free pleasures would be: THE BLACK SCORPION THE DEADLY MANTIS ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU PHANTOM FROM SPACE THE GIANT GILA MONSTER

It wasn't until I got older and became aware of film reviews and how critical "fandom" was of this film. Granted, its no "Them!", but I have always had a fondness for this film, and rank it as my 2nd favorite "big bug movie" ( much better than "The Black Scorpion", "Beginning of the End", or Monster from Green Hell" ) True, my fondness undoubtly stems from the "nostalgia factor", having first seen it at the age of five, but I can proudly say I have never felt "guilty" enjoying "The Deadly Mantis". Moving the thread along, "Monster on the Campus" would be another favorite "guilty" pleasure! Bryan

Cheesy and even dumb in spots, maybe, but it delivers the groceries. The Deadly Mantis has Peter Gunn and Paul Drake takin' on a giant bug that kicks considerable butt. What's not to like? I vaguely remember seeing "The Deadly Mantis" when it was in the theaters (I would have been about 5 or 6 y.o.), and it scared the hell out of me. To someone so young, a heaping helping of disbelief suspension makes for one terrifying specter of bugginess. But, fellas, my all time guilty pleasure is, surprise!, DUNGEON OF HARROW! What are youse groaning about? Alright, I know, the damn thing has no right to be anybody's pleasure, even a guilty one. But it is an obsession for me. Thank your lucky stars that I am not going to bore you with the whys. Other GP's include: anything by Ed Wood THE ASTOUNDING SHE-MONSTER BROADWAY MELODY OF 1929 THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE FIVE MINUTES TO LOVE MANIA (1934) Keep 'em comin', boys and girls! "No! In those days of kiddie matinees and triple horror shows, I always fortified myself with some Charms and a box of Jujubes. I remember the box was white, and the Jujubes themselves were actually kinda hard, like gummy bears left out in the air too long. But oooo, I did love them, especially the red and blue ones! And yes, I know they still make Jujubes, but they're definitely not the same recipe. The candy's much softer, and even the colors are different. Charms came in a square roll, with each piece individually wrapped. We also would buy Junior Mints, Pom-Poms, and had popcorn with REAL butter (not the gross "golden topping" of today's popcorn), plus it was popped right before our very eyes! How many times have I seen huge garbage bags of pre-popped popcorn waiting to be dumped in the so-called "popper" at modern day theaters? A trip to the snack bar was always fun when I was a kid. Nowdays, I actually groan at the prices. Luckily for me, I've discovered a beautiful restored movie house in Skowhegan, Maine that offers first run movies for $3.00 during matinees. And they have real buttered popcorn, too! If I go alone, I always spend less than ten bucks and walk away not only happy but full. Anybody else have any guilty candy pleasures? Rod
