I think the special effects were fine (and I did not notice the wires attached to the space suits) but the Space Station (the "Wheel") could have been spinning a tad slower dontcha think? Not as boring to me for some reason, probably the great presentation helps. The disc really is beautiful, and I like the effects for their retro feel - I have the book and the visuals capture the Bonestell look well. The technical flaws don't bother me. I see the 2001 aspects clearly - I know Bill Warren says he can't believe this influenced Kubrick in any way, but I wonder if Kubrick didn't see it and think "Some interesting ideas - I can do it better"? Because there are sure a lot of parallels: The wheel, shuttle, larger interplanetary vehicle, the "going mad" theme, dead astronaut hanging in space, etc. Kubrick substitutes his cynicism about the human condition and creates a future where human emotions are controlled and downplayed of course, but the germ of the plot is there (minus Clarke's all important sentinel). Obviously 2001 is a superior and original film in its own right, but still, intentional or not, CONQUEST OF SPACE is a less-evolved ancestor - I can see a dissolve shot from the wheel in it to the one in 2001 accompanied by some Strauss music. Jun 21 08 11:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The wheel, shuttle, larger interplanetary vehicle, the "going mad" theme, dead astronaut hanging in space, etc. Those ideas, except for the burial in space, also appeared in virtually every major American magazine in the years from 1948 to 1956 or so. They were often cover features, sometimes the interior articles had lots of color art. Today, it's hard for people who didn't live back then to realize the intensity of interest in space that gripped the American public. There were space stations of many configurations; a "wheel" was very common, as were space shuttles. Kubrick did his homework; I'm sure he watched CONQUEST OF SPACE, but was probably more impressed by the non-fiction book from which the movie got its name. And any number of other such books. Certainly Clarke would have known all about these.

I was particularly taken by the "mental breakdown" idea as it relates to HAL as a basic plot device. Again, not that the idea of a character going nuts and threatening a group or crew was new at the time; I can think of Karloff in LOST PATROL right off the top of my head. I have the book too, and while I'm not (quite) as old as you, I have a lot of "pre-Mercury" space art I've collected over the years. You are certainly correct that the idea of round space stations has been with us for decades. Mostly I was happy to enjoy the film as much as I did on this viewing - indeed, it's those very articles you mention that COS reminded me of in a nice nostalgic way. Previously I really never cared for it all that much. SAM33

OH! You mean in the 2001 movie. Actually, I think it's a keen observation regarding the two films. Not only the idea of a similar subplot driving each film, but the fact that by 1968 it had become such a hoary cliche, if we also add FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and FANTASTIC VOYAGE to that "nutty passenger" sub-genre. Kubrick's forward thinking trendsetter (and one of my very favorite films, btw) begins to look a bit retro in retrospect.
