For someone whose EGO is always mentioned, Jerry makes a little CRITICISM in that commentary that's uncalled-for instead. During that scene where his alarm watch goes off and a marching band song plays, he says it should have SOUNDED more like an actual little alarm watch, and shouldn't have been blasting over the soundtrack. That's funny, since nowadays any given piece of music is blasted over a soundtrack (even if the scene has it coming from a little radio or something where that's impossible), and I've never heard of a film maker considering that a bad idea later on. So it was funny to hear Jerry Lewis of all people being embarrassed about a little thing like that. (It's also funny how that scene looks ahead to cell phones. In other words, the way that tiny machine he carries around puts a great big dent in a conversation when it goes off. That part alone was science fiction, the way it predicted the future.) He is right, it is not immediately apparent that that huge sound is coming from the watch. Feb 2 11 1:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like the part in The Nutty Professor when Les Brown is on stage and introduces Buddy Love and as he walks out on stage, Brown puts out his hand to shake Lewis'. Jerry puts out his hand as well, not to shake Les Brown's hand, but to wave and brush him off the stage. Very funny and I suspect not unlike the real Lewis. I have a mathematical formula: The funnier Jerry Lewis is = the amount of grease in his hair.

Hydrogen will always be a gas. There are so many wacked moments in the Jers ouvre, and yes really really bad ones (not groaner bad, just bad bad). "Where did you get that suit?"

"Where did you get that suit?" Yes, that's The Family Jewels. That would have been perfect if they just cut out the Serious Normal Jerry. The part with the sailor is brilliant. There's a moment in Nutty where he has the bartender make him the wacky drink, and after the bartender is frozen just one last ice cube falls out of the shaker. I wonder if that was intentional, probably.

One of my early movie memories is seeing VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET when it was released theatrically. Who knows. He was really funny there too- "Hey you're cute...like a black widow spider. Now shut your mouth and take the order, lady!" I also liked how he used old time character actors in his films like Benny Rubin, Gavin Gordon and Billy Bletcher. That scene with Gavin Gordon talking to Lewis through our point of view and everybody looking at him (us) and freezing is a great intro to the Buddy Love character. It's his best film. Well, that and Which Way To The Front, but that's a 70's movie.

Just saw a casting notice for a production to be rehearsed in NYC and performed in Nashville with "a Broadway production planned." Weeellll...they all have Broadway productions planned. But it does have some strong Broadway connections with music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes. And the production is directed by... Jerry Lewis. Hmmm. We shall see.

Apr 9 12 11:24 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I picked up a bunch of solo Lewis films on disc and have been blazing through them in chronological order. I kind of spot-checked each one as I got them, and VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET looked dire. It turned out to be OK, just not terribly engaging. It seemed to take place mostly in a living room, and felt like a TV sitcom from that era. I've seen NUTTY PROFESSOR before, and it's good, but not my favorite. Actually, next up IS my favorite: THE LADIES' MAN. Also a big fan of THE DISORDERLY ORDERLY. I watched a smidge of WAY WAY OUT and it seemed pretty lame, but might be weird enough to be interesting. Just finished CINDERFELLA, and while it seems to rate pretty highly with folks, I thought it was the worst one I'd seen yet.

Had great scenes with Toshiro Mifune, and of course, was upstaged by Harry the Rabbit, every time he was onscreen. Which movie was it that Lewis was playing around with a Theramin? (If you've seen Brian Wilson in concert over the past decade or so, his backing band The Wondermints use a theremin live onstage when they play "Good Vibrations.") IT'S ONLY MONEY has a slight sci-fi touch, when the scowl-faced lawnmowers go crazy at the end and threaten to eat (or at least mow down) Jerry. Marshall, I can see why THE LADIES MAN is your fave. It has lots of surreal touches (the upside-down woman in black in the white room, etc.), and it also has a space-age bachelor pad/lounge vibe to it--the gals doing their exercises to the beat music (is there a narrative voice in there too?) as the camera prowls from room to room. Besides the ones you mentioned, I also like THE BELLBOY, THE ERRAND BOY, GEISHA BOY, WHO'S MINDING THE STORE, IT'S ONLY MONEY, THE SAD SACK. Though some critics say positive things about all his different characters in THE FAMILY JEWELS, it does seem as if he's running out of steam a bit and things are becoming too predictable. FAMILY JEWELS does come right after DISORDERLY ORDERLY and THE PATSY, which were both pretty solid, energetic (and financially successful) movies for him.
