Dec 23 09 2:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like DECREE, but I do like TERROR a bit more, both as a Holmes and a Ripper piece. I think Neville is one of the better Great Detectives of his era - and Morley, likely the best filmed Mycroft to date. Plummer is an okay Sherlock in the "Gillette Matinee Idol" mold; Mason is also okay, but a hair too much of a return to the older, blustery Nigel Bruce form for my tastes, after worthy progress away from that direness (sorry, Jay.) The set design is brilliant, the plot is compelling, the ending is truly touching (that last shot before the end credits always gets me), and the relationship between Holmes and Watson is the best ever put on film.

Dec 23 09 2:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Murder by Decree lost me the moment they showed Holmes wearing a deerstalker and cape to the opera and grumbling at the music, and the return to "bumbling Watson" mode didn't help. That said, I thought Plummer made an excellent Holmes and starred in an very good short film based on Silver Blaze (with, I believe, Thorley Walters as Watson.

Dec 23 09 3:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Plummer is not really 'right' for Holmes (here we go again), but he's such a consummate actor that it didn't bother me at all. Mason is a bit too fuddy-duddery, but also a great actor. I always thought Genevieve Bujold's big scene was brilliant and I love the film overall. STUDY IN TERROR is also terrific, but I wouldn't compare the two because it's been ages since I've seen STUDY.

He's so respectful the Holmes universe that a little inattention to the outfitting and gear seems like a little thing to me. I really enjoy his interplay with James Mason's Watson. I appreciated the depiction of Holmes as a practical, working detective in a crime-ridden city that also suffers from political corruption. A respectable budget, literate screenplay and several fine, subtle performances elevate MURDER BY DECREE to more than just a superior Holmes film, it's a superior film. Dec 23 09 4:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Not to make too much of this, but (a) nobody wore "country clothes" to the opera. Just wasn't done. Might as well have Holmes address Queen Victoria as "toots". And more importantly (this would be b) the makers of the film obviously thought (as my grannie did) that the deerstalker and cape were Holmes' "costume" which he wore everywhere, like Batman with the cape and cowl, indicating that they were familiar with the character mostly through cartoons and rumor. Hence, I suspect, the bumbling Watson, also part of the cartoon image. One of the things I like about Study in Terror were the many authentic touches, such as Holmes holding his violin between his knees like a little cello, and the appearance of brother Mycroft (a brilliantly cast Robert Morley). In fact the cast is one of the best things about Terror (which shared its Lestrade with Murder.) Did anyone read the novelization, written by "Ellery Queen"? One of the best Holmes pastiches, with an interesting framing story.
