By the way, I just peeked in my LAND UNKNOWN file, and found a note that the comic book was done by Alex Toth. I'm not nearly as "up" on comic books as I could be -- he was (is?) a Somebody in the comic book world, yes?

Jan 13 06 11:53 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Alex Toth no less? Now I MUST find it! Well, we watched it last night - first time in a year and a half for me. The copy I made from my laser is OK, but the highlights are a bit blown out, and the image is of course a bit soft. Still, very watchable even 12 feet wide. It's as good as I remember it - of course, much of your fondness for these things is nostalgia/imprinting based, but this one also has (imho): Great art direction Decent acting A fast pace (after they get to the Antarctic) Not bad B.S. science (explanation of why the heat stays in/evolution is held in check) Excellent composite work (by Clifford Stein, I believe?) I know not everyone agrees - I re-read Bill Warren's take in KWTS, and he pretty much pans it. Of course there's plenty of antiquated man/woman attitudes, no doubt, and if you hate stylized effects, you're not going to care for it at all. But as for me, I can suspend my disbelief just fine, and I love it! SAM33 PS - Who does the narration on the trailer for ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN - it's familiar - that has to be one of the most over the top voiceovers ever!

The Terror from Beyond Space", "The Land Unknown", and "World Without End" (wearing a satin mini-skirt and high-heels"). What a woman!!!

Feb 15 06 9:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	She was indeed a babe - and surprisingly "mature" - she had acted under the name Shirley Patterson for years - IT is in fact her last IMDb credit, her first is in 1942! - she was in her later 30's in all three of those films. She must have retired for a long time, as she lived until 1995. Here's to Shirley/Shawn! SAM33

Amazingly, she looks completely different in "Itch" than she does in all her other roles. In fact, she seems to look radically different in each role. It took me years to figure out that the stern brunette lady astronaut in "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" is the same sultry babe who struts around in "World Without End". Feb 15 06 8:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	You've touched on one of my pet peeves: The fact that so many actresses look completely different from movie to movie ... then some of them complain that it's harder for them to get ahead in the business than it is for actors. Ummmm.... maybe if we didn't think it was your first movie every time we saw you, you'd get ahead a little faster! It's almost like somebody putting a different name on every article he/she writes, and then after a while asking why nobody seems to appreciate all the work he/she has done. I think the lady who makes a small but sexy appearance in "The Seven Year Itch" as Tom Ewell's secretary is actually Miss Marguarite Chapman (not Shawn Smith), the star of "Flight to Mars" and "Spy Smasher". Miss Chapman hides her luscious light under a bussell in "The Seven Year Itch" compared to the bold and brazen display of her charms in a tight, hinny-high mini-skirt in "Flight to Mars". She is arguably one of the hottest leading ladies of the fifties sci-fi films. This gal has legs that rival Daisy Duke -- and by gum, that's saying something!

May 14 06 4:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	While on vacation in Arizona a few years ago, I discovered hard evidence that there once existed a real-life "Land Unknown" in northern Arizona. In the picture below, I'm standing in front of a giant fossilized skull of an unknown species of dinosaur. Note the eye holes, nostril holes, jaw hinge, and a small remnant of a tooth. This is a genuine, undoctored photograph. I'm still waiting for official comments from the Smithonian Institute. In the meantime, I invite any and all comments from other interested parties. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this discovery is the suggestion that these creature possessed unusually large brains. Mayby this animal evolved just a few thousand years before the dinosaur-killing meteor wiped out the dinosaurs. Imagine a world populated by giant, super-intelligent dinosaurs. Their spacecraft and space stations would be humongus! Maybe I'll write a series of science fiction stories about these amazing creatures. I think they would make Dinotopia seem like Sesame Street!
