Ten bucks a film doesn't seem too unreasonable to me. Unlike the high price DVD-R offerings at Warner Archives, at least this has some titles I actually want.

I'll buy this set -- if the pre-order thingy at TCM ever accepts my order.

Cool news on the films. I'm kind of on a Uni B kick right now, so it's tempting, but if precedent holds, the "exclusive retailer" deal will
be over in 6 months, and this'll be found on Amazon, Deep Discount, etc. in a more reasonable $30 range, I can almost guarantee it. Especially if no
one's paying $50 for it on TCM

10 bucks a film is ok, its the whole shebang in one go that I'd struggle with. And wasn't the earlier set 5 films on 2 discs for 20 dollars?

I think it's possible that when the title becomes actually available for order the price will be changed. This may just be a "placeholder"
listing for now with non-final information.

I'll maybe buy it IF these aren't DVD-r's - if they are, I can wait 'til the price drops. Not even 10 bucks per for all these titles in that
case, just ZOO I really want a good copy of here.
AND I will wait in any case until I hear if they look good or not, because I no longer trust the studios not to just dump old ports of ancient transfers on us suckers, 'er, "collectors" (read:crack addicts). SAM33 |

PICKY PICKY PICKY AND THAT'S COMMING FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS PICKY. (That's knows, not nose for the commedians among you, Right Tom?) Everyone forget that VHS tapes used to cost $39.99 and $29.99 before they dropped to $19.99? I think you folks have been spoiled by the low price for the crappy DVD sets of the past that you all railed against. Now you're all crying the blues because you have to shell out close to $10.00 each for 5 movies. When you need someone like me to tell you all to grow up, you're really in trouble. |

Mongo wrote:My family also paid $1200 for a VHS player in 1980. Does that mean it makes sense to pay that much for a DVD player now? The issue is that 49.99 for a set of 5 mediocre films on DVD in 2009 is grossly overpriced. I'm hoping this is a secondary market player that has jacked up the price. A reasonable ceiling price for a set like this is more like $24.99. |

Has anyone toyed with the idea that the price reflects how many of these things they feel they can expect to sell? The irony here being that it might make
sense to have to pay more for lesser more obscure stuff, because you may be one of 500 people who even want a creaky third-tier programer with forgotten names
in them.

Exactly! Well said. This is still better than if they were released in Warners Archive program at $19.99 a pop for DVD-Rs. I think to say that we shouldn't expect to pay what we did when these came out on VHS in the 80s and 90s--because it is different times; we should also be able to say (not that anyone would want to) that we shouldn't expect to pay what we did three to five years ago either--because it is different times. When the economy suffers, prices usually go up. I will support this release and hope for future ones as well. |

I know they are not unaware that fans have been asking for ISLAND OF LOST SOULS and THE UNINVITED for years. Those two titles alone have a bit broader fan base than all the five of the other titles compined. Still, you won't hear me complain. At least 5 more B-horror movies titles ARE getting a release. Whatever obscure titles are left unreleased may NEVER see the light of day again on any format, so I for one am very grateful these five did escape the vault. Cromwell |

$10 for a modern transfer from a 35mm element is only $4 more than an Alpha DVD transferred from an old U-Matic cassette of a decades-old mediocre analog
telecine of a battered 16mm TV print.

AnthonyOsika wrote:You're missing the point. The reason you paid $1200 for a VHS player in 1980 was because it was bigger, better and sturdier made (out of metal) then modern DVD players that for the most part are made out of plastic. And whether you or I think a particular film is mediocre means nothing. These are not Public Domain films that you can find at your local Walmart in the $1.00 or $5.00 Bin. These are Studio releases and as such Universal can set and charge whatever they want. Of course no one is twisting your arm to buy it. |

Compared to the overpriced Warner Archive trash these are almost a steal - and the price will drop sooner or later.

Mongo wrote:The reason we paid $1200 for the player was not because it was better than today's DVD players but that it was the market price for that technology in 1980. Universal certainly can set their price point for this set but if the perception is that it is too expensive sales will suffer. The good old supply and demand curve never lies. |
