There's a new episode tomorrow at 4:30pm, I'm going to try and tune in. Judging from the trailer it looks vastly more entertaining than Heroes.

This probably belongs on a Super Sentai forum somewhere that I'm not a member of but has anyone seen the new tokusatsu Kamen Rider show on the CW?
I didn't know this existed until this week when I saw the toys at Toys R Us, but its apparently been on TV since January.

We've discussed this in a few others threads. Here's one:

Thanks, its good to see to see that the show got some positive initial reactions. Also if it doesn't upset to many people I would like to keep posting any
future thoughts regarding Kamen Rider here rather than dragging up an old Ultraman titled thread. Or maybe we should just start a tokusatsu thread, unless
there already is one...

So I watched today's "all new" 4:30 episode of Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. Its a fun fun 30-mins. More action than other live-action
superhero shows like Smallville or Heroes. Also unlike Power Rangers or the old Masked Rider show this one looks like a
real US-Japanese co-production rather than an American show with Japanese FX work (i.e. stock footage) fed in. I really enjoyed it and plan to watch
tomorrow's 11:00 episode if I can catch it.

Was able to catch the 11:00 episode of Kamen Rider today. It picked up right where the Friday episode left off. More fighting which is a plus but also
a fair amount of drama. I like the fact that this American Sentai show is taking the idea seriously and playing it straight rather than for laughs like they
did with Power Rangers in the 90s. Maybe if Kamen Rider proves popular enough we could see a renewed intrest in American Sentai shows of this
caliber. That would be awesome!

Kaijubait wrote:True, I just have a tendency to refer to anything that looks like Super Sentai (i.e. Kamen Rider, Metal Heroes, etc...) as Sentai. I know the more correct term is tokusatsu, or as I've seen on some sites "toku" for short. |

"Sentai" (later "Super Sentai") is a term specifically for "Task Force" (Sentai) shows, which started in 1975 with SECRET TASK
FORCE: GORANGER (Himitsu Sentai Gorenja, 1975-77). These series have run almost continuously since GORANGER, and in 1993 when DINOSAUR TASK FORCE: ZYURANGER
(Kyoryu Sentai Jurenja, 1992-93) was adapted for American television, the genre became known as POWER RANGERS.
"Tokusatsu" itself is a shortened from "Tokubetsu Satsuei" (Special Visual Photography). In more recent years, it has come to be a moniker for all Japanese live action special effects series and movies. The subcategories are "Daikaiju Eiga" (Giant Monster Movies), "Superheroes," etc. Recently, American fandom has used the term to describe the shows they are watching to pronounce it independently from anime. They have also shortened it to "Toku" -- but this is not recognized, nor used, in Japan. |

Hachigatsu wrote:Thanks as always August for the info. Also maybe you could tell me, has anyone written an english language book on the history of Super Sentai? I know there are some great websites out there and also some really good articles from magazines like Ultra-Fan but I was just wondering if maybe a book existed too, maybe one that was written recently to celebrate Super Sentai's 30th Anniversary or Power Ranger's 10th Anniversary. |

Unfortunately, there are books in English on the subject.

If you're interested, on SciFi Japan we did an interview with KAMEN RIDER: DRAGON KNIGHT producer/director Steve Wang covering how the series was developed and Americanized: http://www.scifijapan.com...eturns-to-us-television/ Note to ThunderScore: Love that PSA!

Keith Aiken wrote: Thanks for the article Keith. I check Sci-Fi Japan's site pretty regularly so again I'm really surprised that this somehow managed to slip by me until now. It good to see that Steve Wang is fighting to get this kind of show taken seriously in the US and that even if Bandai only sees it as a "big toy commercial" he doesn't. |
