Apr 21 09 5:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks to the kindness of a certain fellow member (maybe I shouldn't mention his name, seeing as how it is gray market.) I've now see this movie for the first time in at least a decade. In fact in the week I've had it I've watched it twice. For a change, it's one film revisited that I find just as affecting as I remember! Jerry waking up in his mechanical body gives me just as much a chill as it did when I was 5 or 25. I really wonder how much of an inspiration it was for ROBOCOP's awakening and numerous scenes in the two part story re-introducing the Cybermen to the revived DOCTOR WHO. It's all the more heart breaking because Ross Martin in his short time on screen, manages to be so completely likable. Taken out of context I could so how someone could say Ross Martin's performance is too nice and "ah, shucks" modest to be believable, but boy does it work! I'm not sure I've ever seen another film villain quite like Otto Kruger as the dad. Extremely cool and collected for a mad scientist, and for a change his misdeeds are clearly motivated by alturistic motives, and a bit of paternal pride. His madness is a certain lack of understanding of the humanity he is trying to help. Apr 21 09 7:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I feel exactly the same as SparkieGojira. My greatest little tribute to it is this. I was almost never scared by a story in the DAYTIME. But I first saw Colossus in the daytime (a Saturday afternoon), and it scared the hell out of me! I clearly remember very frequently looking at the door of the room I was in, as if to make sure I was alone! And the SAD side of it, as much as the scary side, also got to me that first time.

Oh I forgot to mention the sadness! It's an over whelming part of the movie, and I think the core of it's scary side! Overwhelming pity is engendered for the monster from it's first scene. Also there is no real villain, just misguided good intentions, and a very good man put into a very unnatural state. The story is of horrific tragedy, without a clear cut villain or misguided cause to root against. I can identify with all the players, making the movie genuinely hard to bare... or I guess I mean sad. The aforementioned in an earlier post "theatricality" gives the movie a light enough a touch that I can watch it again and again. But it is such a sad, sad movie. -Clark

I'm the same way; I have many dvdrs (some bought, some downloaded) that I will happily exchange for a legit copy. I just got into torrenting and have found a few Thriller episodes that are slowly making their way to my computer. I think the only dvdr I haven't replaced with the official release is Tobor the Great. "The important question is not, are there aliens on other worlds? No. The important question is, do they have ray guns?"

Apr 2 11 4:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This 1958 profile of Ed Wolff says he played the Gocko in FLASH GORDON (most sources I'm familiar with say it was Glenn Strange) and the "leader of the mob" in Chaney's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Were these anecdotes dreamed up by a press agent, or could they be authentic? (I know it doesn't count for much, but the IMDB doesn't list Wolff in the cast of either film.)

Then again, the Goko had to take a fall, so it's possible that Strange doubled Wolff, who might have been leery of the action. I know Ed Wolff was the robot in THE PHANTOM CREEPS. Funny that the Gocko and Phantom Creeps costumes didn't show up any other films. (That I'm aware of, anyway. )

All I can add is that he told the same PHANTOM story to Ross Martin on the set of COLOSSUS OF N.Y.

Aug 22 11 2:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Holy Cow... I just watched this via the brand new DVD from Olive FIlms, and it was really enjoyable. (I'd seen it once before on a really poor-looking VHS bootleg and cannot recall a thing about it, so this was like the first time). The DVD quality here was SUPERB, by the way! I must say that even though I don't get scared of horror movies, the very first time I heard the robot's unhinged and static-y voice as he's being given life, it sent absolute shivers of discomfort down my spine - I was terrified! (Of course I must confess that right around that time I had been nodding out just a little, so I was kind of experiencing the effect through in an eerie dream-like way that roused me fully awake in horror!) I liked the look of the robot, and the unnatural way he's sometimes photographed jerkily lumbering along (which sometimes sloppily reflected the other characters' motions in the same scenes). Just really creepy. If they could have consistently managed to photograph the other people's reactionary movements at "normal pace" while the robot only was moving awkwardly, it would have been even more weirdly effective. Old man Otto Kruger probably was embarrassed, but I liked him in this just as I enjoyed his turn as a mad doc in THE JUNGLE CAPTIVE. This movie's also got unintentional chuckles, too (I loved Kruger's silly expression at the end of the film when the robot is "downed"!). Mala Powers was just adorable here - I met her at a Fanex convention many years ago and I'm glad I did, now that I've seen this. Fun '50s Flick! Now one of my favorites from the genre! That scene is one of the creepiest of any 50's movie I've seen. Besides the voice, what really creeped me out were the shots from the giants perspective as he was being awakened. It put the viewer in Ross Martins position and really showed how scary and foreign such a thing would be like for the person going through it. The first time I saw Robo Cop, when he was being brought back to life, reminded so much of that scene. I don't know if the guys who made that had seen this movie, but it was eerily similar. I'm going to have to pick up the new dvd. I have a pretty good VHS copy, but that is it.
