(08/25/09 9:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Speaking for myself only I would prefer getting OAR shorts (anamorphically enhanced) over getting 3D transfers. Of course it would be nice to have both, but as a practical matter, OAR is more important to me. Second motion for Mr. S to please weigh in with whatever knowledge he is allowed to share. Just so I don't appear ungrateful with this request....I really do appreciate the excellent work Columbia/Sony has done with the Stooges release and classic films in general. In my opinion, they are the "classic film studio of the year" for 2009. This is taking nothing away from the fine team at Warners, but they lost the title with their virtual pull-out from the retail market and the poor execution of the Archive program.

They played on TV like that forever. Probably weren't seen OAR since their heydey. We're damn lucky to be getting all these in chronological order and looking so spiffy, after all this time.

Also, leaving a short like SPOOKS open-matte might not seem harmful at first, but there's a major gag at the start of the show that's ruined because you can see the punchline that's (literally) written on the door. (08/26/09 10:09 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	FYI, the Film Forum (and every other 3-D revival I've seen) incorrectly showed the 3-D shorts in 1.37. The first time they were shown since the 1950's in their intended 1.85 ratio was at the second World 3-D Expo in 2006.

It's just that I wish this could've been included in the set to make it complete. I have never seen it in 3D or in 1.85:1. Thanks to Sony/Columbia for putting all of these out and in the quality they are in. I have the entire set thus far and am really digging them. Great memories.... "I saw what I saw when I saw it!"

Believe it or not, the Stooge compilations sell so well that they are not considered "catalog" but are lumped in with new pictures, so my involvement with them is quite limited. I can tell you this much: Sony policy is now to release everything OAR, but from 1953-58, Columbia was shooting every non-anamorphic film "1.85-safe," meaning they could be shown either way. So even if the shorts do end up full-frame on the discs, they would indeed be open-matte and not pan-and-scan. As for 3-D, I had heard some discussion about it, but what decision was made I do not know. Mike S.

The problem is, most directors don't pay attention to what goes on above or below the wide-screen borders, and lots of gaffes start showing up (not to mention your compositions are totally thrown off). See my example above with SPOOKS. There are also lots of issues with this in the features, where you see the tops of sets, spotlights, boom mics, and other equipment you're not supposed to. And even worse, to compensate for this, some telecine operators zoom in during the transfer, cutting off all four sides. It seems to me it would just be easier to do it correctly widescreen in the first place, but I'll still buy the set even if it's not. J. Theakston Capitol Theatre, Rome, NY
