Of course, being a footloose globetrotter, he was out and about!

Apparently my missus heard the explosion when she was in bed yesterday morning. I suspect it might have been my stomach rumbling, however.

Dec 13 05 12:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The place that Hammer & Guest (and before that, the BBC) shot Q-2 was the Shell Haven Refinery (they get special credit at the end of the film)... and I seem to remember the scenes of Quatermass in the factory village were shot at Hemel Hempsted... anyone want to check this out further?

Dec 13 05 2:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some of ENEMY was shot in Hemel Hempstead, absolutely -- a Val Guest interview or a story about ENEMY was where I heard of the place for the first time. When I got Guest's answering machine Sunday, I said I heard Hemel Hempstead was burning down and asked if they had a birthday party for him there, and the 94 candles got out of hand.

Dec 14 05 10:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Does anyone know why this film seemingly disappeared from TV syndication for approximatly 15-20 years between the late 60's and the mid-80's? I recall seeing it on a Charlotte NC station in 1964, and then not again until an HBO run in the aforesaid 80's. By that time, the "Enemy From Space" monicker had been replaced with the British "Quatermass II" title. The 1979 Feature Film Sourcebook for TV syndication do not indicate availability in any package. Does anyone recall seeing it broadcast during that period? It was distributed by UA in 1957, and came a-cropper B.O. wise, with only $148,602 domestic rentals generated out of 5,473 bookings. The number of bookings is pretty mobest, but in line with other low-bubget UA genre releases such as "Curse Of The Faceless Man", "Voodoo Island", etc.

Dec 17 05 3:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember seeing this one on the local Houston horror movie program, "WEIRD", back in the early Sixties. The scene where Quatermass (whom I always wanted to call QuaRtermass) looks into the porthole of one of those massive tanks to see the churning alien colony always creeped me out. Very reminiscent of Caltiki or the Blob. I found the bleakness of the landscape in this movie very compelling, it seemed to reflect the unfeeling nature of the alien menace. "No! You stay here. Look out for more zombies..."

I agree that Guest's work on the Quatermass films was excellent, but I attribute a good share of their quality to the stories, and those were the work of Nigel Kneale. On the other hand, Kneale had nothing to do with what I think is Guest's best SF movie, THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE.

(Did anyone else feel the later mini-series, with Sir John Mills, was disappointing? I recall reading that Nigel Kneale supposedly said it could have used a touch of Brian Donlevy...even though he'd been less than impressed with Donlevy as Quatermass.) THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE was an excellent film, and the DVD has some nice extras. Well worth checking into. I've heard that Hammer's X THE UNKNOWN was originally conceived as a Quatermass film, until Nigel Kneale stepped in and stopped the studio from using his character in it. Does anyone know if this is true?

I doubt that Kneale ever said that he felt QUATERMASS/THE QUATERMASS CONCLUSION could have used a touch of Brian Donlevy. He was happy with the casting of John Mills. So was I, though as you suggest, it's a disappointing conclusion.

Dec 21 05 9:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I too found "The Quatermass Conclusion" most disappointing..however I was also fascinated with it.We who knew waited so long for a fourth installment (rumors were abound in the 70's bout' a new Quatermass movie)...but it was quite a wait.And it was interesting to see what had happened to an old friend.Sir John can only bring depth and color to any character he plays(oh he is that good)And Im sure Nigel Kneale loved the performance(probably so close to who he really is)...But the thing that really freaks me out is how prophetic Kneales' writing is...Just think about the "Planet People" and a London wasteland.....just look at what happened in Paris and everywhere I suppose.Anyway Kneale always had a good pulse on the future with all the Quatermass films..just look and you'll find erie coincidence.Some parts of "Conclusion" were pretty cool.The Levitating little girl who blows up into crystals...And the death of Joe Kapp & family was provokingly grim...There is probably some more meat in this movie we can cut up on the board!

Watching "The Quatermass Conclusion" today one is literally transported back to a Britain of the late Seventies, a time of depression, strikes, high unemployment, inner city violence, punk etc. I feel it paints a not so disimilar picture to Derek Jarman's JUBILEE. Mills is a fine actor, but I didn't really warm to him here... but then I really like Donlevy's Quatermass, especially in QUATERMASS 2 aka ENEMY FROM SPACE which remains one of the highpoints of 50's sci-fi, so he must've done something right.
