Feb 2 11 12:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Jim: I know what you mean about the convolutions of the Valley of the Mist-Ring Around Saturn-Brave One-Beast of Hollow Mountain-Toro Estrella-Emilio y Guloso 1949-1956 assemblage. I gave a lecture on Willis O'Brien at one the Fanex conventions around 20 years ago when we had Ray Harryhausen as guest and Ray and I had a long talk at dinner about the O'Brien connection with the above. (along with the repeated similarities of the two respective scripts for Mist and Ring). Fascinating stuff!

One of the Harryhausen books mentions someone coming to him with the idea for Land Unknown well before it was made at Universal. I believe the O'Brien connection is mentioned in the Fantastic Film article (Paul Mandell?) on the movie. Edit: The article is in Fantastic Films #24, the one with a cover painting of the Star Wars cast gathered around a microphone. I'd check it out myself but all of my old magazines are in storage. Feb 4 11 7:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Here is some O'Brien art that was recently sold through an auction (no, I didn't even bid). The auction house said it was from Gwangi but I think it looks much more like Valley of Mist. It's fun to see how to get a dinosaur into a cart anyway. Wouldn't you love to see this done with stop motion?!! They had more O'Brien art there at the auction and if there's any interest I'll post it. There was a great FilmFax issue a few years ago with O'B art from Beast of Hollow Mountain, and the art was much better than the effects in the movie, the beast actually looked alive, folks should check it out, it had Vamperella on the cover. Looking at the picture I think it might have been easier to just lead him into the cage, although maybe that Dino was like a cat, which hates to be caged, also, they need a top on the cage, what is to stop the Dino from climbing out. Ray would never have something that ridiculous that in one of his movies. It is good to be alive in this time when we can see so much of the past that was once hidden from us, and yes Jim, that scene would look awesome in O'Brien stop motion. Feb 8 11 8:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That is great stuff. Where has it been all these years? Darlene O'Brien gave Forry books of OBie's drawings for MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. I'm not sure what happened to them; it's possible she just loaned them to be copied. They were all on a kind of tan board with OBie's sketches in brown ink, or maybe those colors were a result of the copying process. I was always amazed and impressed with the amount of detail, the sense of action, and even the humor that OBie seemed to literally have at his fingertips.

The last three pieces of Willis O'Brien art posted above were all recently sold through Profiles in History. They presented them as if the drawings were made for O'Brien's GWANGI which would date them to the early 1940s. I was guessing that the drawings were actually made in the early 1950s for VALLEY OF MIST because of the resemblance in some of the depicted action to a couple of Ray Harryhausen's drawings for that project. The dinosaurs and the characters are also a fairly good match between the O'Brien and Harryhausen art. I never saw the O'Brien art for MIGHTY JOE YOUNG that you mention. I wonder what happened to those items? Many years ago I did see a number original O'Brien storyboards from GWANGI going for sale at a bookstore in Hollywood but I have no idea where those drawings ended up. Feb 8 11 9:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched BEAST OF HOLLOW MT today on a fuzzy DVDR recorded off of TNT God-knows-when. I liked it as a kid...the film takes it's sweet time getting to the monster. The tune they're playing at the Mexican town fest sticks in your head long after the movie ends (lol). Yeah the animation is kinda DAVEY & GOLIATH level but to a 10 yr old kid in the 60s who cared? Notice nobody questioned the dinosaur being there, what it was, or anything....I suppose cowboys and Mexican caballeros didn't learn about dinosaurs in school. Were there other dinos in the mountain? What did the allosaur eat in the mountain? What if it layed eggs...there's a sequel brewing in those fetid swamps.

Then more deaths start, and they fear the ghost of the beast has returned to get revenge. It is then discovered that there are two dinos loose in Hollow Mountain. It could be called....The Ghost of Hollow Mountain.
