(08/02/09 12:43 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I wonder if ,after last year`s ICONS OF ADVENTURE & ICONS OF HORROR sets whether Sony had plans to release any more Columbia Hammers? Apparently THE DAMNED, CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND & YESTERDAY`S ENEMY are to be released on Region 2 later this year. Maybe the two Region 1 Hammer sets didn`t sell enough to justify any more future releases.

So you got two thrillers, two war movies, two sci-fi movies and two period adventure films. A fantastic little film, and featuring what is possibly Peter Cushing's best performance for the company. Andre Morell ain't too bad in it, either. Long overdue a legit release. I'd love to be able to replace my overworked bootleg DVD-R.

VISA TO CANTON THE OLD DARK HOUSE THE UGLY DUCKLING THE SNORKEL MANIAC YESTERDAY'S ENEMY CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND THESE ARE THE DAMNED CREATURES THE WORLD FORGOT SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST BRIGAND OF KANDAHAR CASH ON DEMAND THESE ARE THE DAMNED deserves a stand-alone release; it's a well-regarded movie from a well-regarded director (Joseph Losey), and the British cut is substantially different from the U.S. cut. I hope Sony give sthis the treatment it deserves. Maybe it's just me, but I can't think of how to group any of the others to make a "themed" collection, beyond "here's another bunch of Hammer movies." THE SNORKEL and NEVER TAKE SWEETS/CANDY FROM A STRANGER are particularly good, and deserve to be released, but perhaps not as individual titles. I suppose MANIAC, CASH ON DEMAND and THE FULL TREATMENT/STOP ME BEFORE I KILL! (which I've never seen and know next to nothing about) could be shoehorned into the same collection as the other two.

(08/04/09 2:11 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Perhaps they shouldn't worry too much about 'theming' a collection - after all, when Universal released their 8-film set in 2005 (THE HAMMER HORROR SERIES) it contained five horror movies, two thrillers and a pirate adventure. Nobody complained about the films being mismatched.

(08/04/09 4:24 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Old Dark House is included in the upcoming William Castle collection and I thought Mike Schlesinger posted in recent months that These Are The Damned was being considered for a standalone release. I think a collection of The Snorkel, Maniac, Full Treatment and Cash on Demand would be a nifty Icons of Suspense set. Full Treatment is about a racecar driver who's been suffering from blackouts and bouts of rage since being involved in a crash. Throw in an ominous psychiatrist and it's not long before our hero encounters a disappearing corpse and is gripped by the did-I-kill-her-and-she-is-actually-dead conundrum. Urbanely directed by Val Guest in the south of France and moodily photographed, Full is the first of Hammer's mini-Diabolique riffs. It's non-identification with that group of films seems to owe to its rarity and possibly its title.

It also has not yet been cleared by our censor board, who only list the original film's "X" certificate awarded in 1961. It would require a new certificate for DVD release.

(08/04/09 6:13 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm liking Damascinos' theoretical "Icons of Suspense" quartet of Hammer titles, though with NEVER TAKE SWEETS FROM A STRANGER added, or in place of THE DAMNED (if 3-4 films per set is the template). SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST, THE SCARLET BLADE and BRIGAND OF KANDAHAR sort of go together. As for some of what's left, if it would make more marketing sense, maybe they should combine them with some non-Hammer genre titles Sony owns-- CREATURES THAT THE WORLD FORGOT could go with, say, WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS (1978) and VALLEY OF THE DRAGONS (1961)... Icons of Schlocky Fantasy-Adventure. THE DAMNED might fit in a sci-fi collection with the vastly underrated THE MIND OF MR. SOAMES (1970) and THE 27TH DAY (1957) CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND and YESTERDAY'S ENEMY with THE COCKLESHELL HEROES (1955) and TARAWA BEACHHEAD (1958) or NO TIME TO DIE (1958, aka TANK FORCE) THE UGLY DUCKLING (if Sony has a print of it) with THE THIRTY FOOT BRIDE OF CANDY ROCK (1959) "I say ALL you scientists are CRACKPOTS!
