And there's a very eerie "from beyond the grave" anecdote in Basil Rathbone's autobiography. Worth checking out.

Could it be that perhaps ghosts are felt and sensed, as in a presence that is invisible rather than seen, and that's why they're called ghosts? Yes, I would. My semi-belief in ghosts is purely an emotional or subconscious doubt or fear. In actuality, though, I have never felt or sensed any sort of unseen presence or spirit. Nada.

I remember lots of the usual unexplained noises and such, but two things that stand out in my mind are my cousins telling me about seeing figures standing over their beds at night that weren't there when the lights came on and the time my aunt (not a particularly fanciful person either) waiting up late one night to catch her wayward son sneaking in, hearing the door open and close and footsteps coming down the hall and then, when they footsteps were right in front of her door, throwing it open to find no one there. As I said, I have no personal experience with this ghost at all but the family was convinced the house was haunted. Richard Matheson, by the way, is a confirmed spiritualist and in his introduction to What Dreams May Come essentially claims it's all based on fact.
