Bill Warren wrote: es, that's true--at least the head of the Mutant was based on a rejected Xenomorph design. But there were other designs, too; a famous article in Collier's featured a big color photo of a lineup of the Creature, the Mutant and a Xenomorph--but it's not the one used in the movie, and it's not the Mutant head, either. It's a large prop with a transluscent head and two eyes (only one is visible in the Collier's photo) that look like they could project out on stalks. It has no discernible mouth. This head, now the property of director Bill Malone, was used on screen--at the end of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode "Sign of Satan." A slender model wearing the large head sneaks up on Sir Alfred.

This also is one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all times. I agree with everything bipolarber said. I love Richard Carlson's acting in the movie as a renegade amateur astronomer, I like his confrontations with the sheriff. I love the desert locations, the unexpected and loud sounds made when the "meteor" is first shown in the sky, or when the strange-looking helicopter takes off. There are a few things about the movie that puzzled me, like I never noticed when Putnam got duplicated, or were the strange noises on the phone line due to listening, or perhaps the alien's way of transporting themselves from place to place(?). I wish they would have done a sequel while the majority of the actors were alive.
It is not the perfect movie, but it works well for me.
