Funnily enough, I sometimes HAVE wondered how real-life daily-newspaper reports of giant-1950s-monster-attacks would read. Maybe you and/or our resident newspaper maven (Sir David) could think about one day tackling one ... ? The only suggestion I can make: Practically the first thing I read was the Eisenhower photo caption, in which Eisenhower was misspelled.

Two movies that did feature newspaper stuff along that line are THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL--the front page featured a kind of horror scene of Gort running amok--and KRONOS. We see two hypothetica drawings of Kronos--both of which are impressive, neither of which really look like Kronos, or each other. That has always amused me. (I don't think both drawings were on newspaper front pages; one may have been flourished by a TV anchorman.) I suspect the Sand Rock Sentinel would kind of gloss over the alien visit. The amusing headlines would be from town newspapers ELSEWHERE in the region. "Towers of Stone? What's Next, The Loch Ness Monster?"

Well, to be fair here, the first picture is clearly listed as an artist's rendering based on eyewitness testimony. I'm sure it would be difficult to get a good reading based on a Mexican field-worker who's still in shock from seeing a metal beast plow his friends and family. Early renderings of that sort are always somewhat off the mark. The second one is somewhat accurate to what Kronos looks like. What really bugs me is why does that anchorman take it so lightly? He's practically giggling througout the whole report. I guess at that point, they weren't taking it seriously. ---- -J. Theakston

I don't understand--what did you THINK I was saying? I was expressing appreciation of the idea that the two drawings DID NOT look like Kronos OR each other. They were clearly based on inaccurate or insufficient eyewitness reports--a smart idea true to real-life newspaper errors. To me, this is another of the elements in that movie that make it one of my favorite second-level SF movies of the 1950s, along with, say, MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD.

The thing had wings, no less!

I hate to pile on Bill, but I too thought you were taking a slight jab at Kronos pointing this out. I do remember, though, in KWtS you speak highly of it. BTW, what's the (Wade Williams) DVD of Kronos like? I've always thought this was a nifty film as well.

Mar 28 06 4:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I worked at AMC, we licensed this film from Wade. He sent a crappy pan and scan transfer from 16mm. I had the pleasure of calling him to tell him it was unacceptable and we wouldn't broadcast it that way. He finally - and very reluctantly - agreed to do a new widescreen transfer from the 35mm fine grain. He later made his money back (and then some) by releasing that transfer on DVD. So you can thank AMC for it! While he professes a great love for these films, it's easier getting blood out of a stone than convincing Wade to spend any money on their preservation.

The DVD's not bad at all - not enhanced, unfortunately, but since it's b&w, it can be blown up pretty big and look OK. Just a great little film, in my opinion, and I love George Jetson as a scientist - what else would he be? SAM33

If I woke up tomorrow morning and found out some Hollywood relative I never heard of died and left me the rights to THE CHFB BULLET MYSTERY (1932) with Jack Mulhall, and I figured out I could make 10 grand releasing it on DVD the way it is .... I wouldn't SPEND 10 grand restoring it, in order to sell 12 more copies. Or even five grand. Or even..........
