Nov 20 11 3:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched this movie again a few days ago. Truly one of the best science-fiction films of the 1950s, IMHO. And somewhat underrated, it seems to me-----always overshadowed by Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds, The Day The Earth Stood Still, etc... The last third of the film offers some of the most grandiose and convincing scenes of space travel of any film made prior to 2001: A Space Odyssey. This film was a major trip for 1950's kids, leaving the viewer today to wander why with few exceptions the new crop of filmmakers have little for the imagination, Star Wars and others aside. The ridicule of this film from the robot puppet group is not surprising, but a serious viewing of this films is to reignite Ackerman's 'sense of wonder' from the early FM content. I was lucky enough to see this on the big screen for the first time (on a double bill with Forbidden Planet, no less!) and the sense of wonder I felt as the saucer approached Metaluna, seeing its war-torn surface, and the city located in the opening in the planet's crust just thrilled me down to my toes! (Sure, I still sing, "Normal view!" when we get to that part of the score, but it doesn't detract.) LOL This Island Earth still stands with the best of them. "[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough, the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON
